Prince covers Shania Twain's 'You're Still the One': Listen to the vintage audio!

Back in the late ’90s, something happened that was so magical it would never be heard of again: Prince, that avid hater of the Internet, took a stab at Web 1.0 and posted onto his site a RealPlayer stream of himself and Marva King covering Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One.” (Of course, since he’s Prince, he called it “Ur Still the 1,” but it’s the same song.) Some 16 years then passed, and people went on with their daily lives and bought iPods and Zunes, and the song was forgotten.
Until now. Dan Chamberlain dug up the relic while ripping old “Napster-era” mix CDs onto his laptop, and now the great cover demo is back in our lives, America. Give it a listen below:
Thanks to Dan Chamberlain and his vintage collection of ripped mp3s, we have evidence that Prince once covered Shania Twain and posted a RealPlayer stream on his website.Featuring Marva King, "Ur'e Still the 1" isn't the Purple One's first foray into cover songs (check out 1996's Emancipation), but because of Chamberlain, this ode to Twain isn't lost forever. Listen below!
A welcome discovery from music’s lost and found here, with this recording of Prince giving his own take on Shania Twain‘s 1998 single ‘You’re Still The One’.
The recording recently resurfaced thanks to writer Dan Chamberlain who uploaded it to his Tumblr.
Supposedly Prince had just heard the song for the first time on the radio, instantly phoning up singer friend Marva King for help, before relocating to his studio where he recorded the cover with Twain’s original music video playing in the background.
A highlight comes with the very Prince-esque guitar solo about three-quarters in.
Chamberlain writes in an accompanying note to the stream:
“Ripping old mix CDs on to my laptop I found this Napster-era cover, briefly available as a RealPlayer stream on Prince’s website.
Like his covers of "One of Us" and "I Can't Make U Love Me" off 1996’s Emanicpation, the arrangement isn’t earth-shattering but the solo at 2:15 is terrific, plus you could not be listening to Prince cover Shania Twain, so y’know.”
