Shania Twain is keeping busy while isolating at home on her ranch, writing new music and playing her timeless hits to raise money for various charities. And until she can get back to her Las Vegas residency, the Grammy winner is hoping to keep her fans entertained with the release of I Still Believe (now available on Blu-ray and DVD). The message of the film—about the real-life story of a Christian-music megastar (played by Riverdale's K.J. Apa) and his search for personal and professional success—is one Twain can very much relate to. "I'm playing a role that is so similar and had so many things in common to my life as a parent," Twain says of her role as Apa's onscreen mom. "I feel very fortunate to have been a part of this amazing story."
And while Twain's life story has been documented for years, there's still plenty we don't know about the country singer. For one, what's her favorite self-care product? And does she have a favorite fashion trend from the ’90s? Here, Twain opens up about the small pleasures in life, what she's cooking these days, and more.
The best secret ingredients for your soup
I love to eat and make lentil soups. I make my own savory croutons from left over bread loaves, and I like to use cheese rinds as part of the soup base. Simmer olive oil in the pot with lots of fresh garlic, and then add the spices and herbs.
The social media app I’m obsessed with
Twitter. I enjoy reading and writing tweets to stay in touch directly with fans. It’s my favorite no fuss, spontaneous communication.
Drunk Elephant's Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil is my favorite face oil. I remove makeup with it and wear it morning and night after washing my face. I always apply it before using moisturizer. It brings color to my face instantly and leaves it feeling so lovely. I gave several to friends and family for Christmas gifts—gotta share the love.
My secret beauty trick
My mother and grandmothers had permed hair most of their adult life, so they learned that putting heated olive oil on the hair and leaving in wrapped in a plastic cap overnight saves the hair from breaking and softens the curls. It worked after my first, hair-frying perm.
The products my family steals from me
My husband (Frédéric Thiébaud) steals my hairspray, and I steal his razor. My sister often goes home with a pair of my favorite sunglasses. Grrrr!
My fave fashion trend from the ’90s
Boyfriend, distressed jeans because they're easy to wear and versatile. I like a neutral, comfortable fit, [which brings an] effortless cool factor.
The item of clothing I’m obsessed with
My Yeezys. I wear these shoes with sleek pants, blouse and blazer, or with sweat pants and hoodies when I travel. They're so easy to slip on and off through security and never seem to wear. They even hang in there when I wear them to clean the horse stalls! Comfort is a big part of what makes them a favorite for me, plus the fact that they hold up with all the wear and tear I put them through.
My favorite snack to make at home
Popcorn with salt and olive oil. I eat most of my popcorn watching TV. It’s always air-popped. Sometimes I’ll put some seasoned salt on to change it up. I always eat too much even though I eat each piece one at a time.
My must-see reality-TV binge
Below Deck. Sometimes I just need to turn off by turning on shows that brings some relief from the usual daily stresses and have nothing to do with my own daily life. If I don't, I find myself gravitating toward television that is intense and thought-provoking, which keeps my emotions lingering for long periods of time. Sometimes you just need to have a laugh and give your brain a break.
The best pair of leggings
Nike leggings are consistent in cut and wear. They aren’t the longest lasting, but they bring out new colors and designs often enough that I’m happy to change them out after so many washes. My preferred cut are the high-waist styles.
Tennis and horse riding. Tennis is a super cardio workout where I forget I’m working out because it’s so fun to play. It also has a quick satisfaction factor so you can see improvement in your game quickly if you play regularly. Plus, having the option to play doubles keeps it from ever getting boring. Horse riding is more a passion than a sport for me. Horses are incredible animals, stunning to look at and have a calm tenderness that is therapeutic and grounding. The riding aspect is great for core fitness, balance, focus, and can be as easy or physically challenging as you want.
My favorite rom-com
50 First Dates. Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler are very believable as a real couple in this film, which makes a very unrealistic story work. The movie always makes me feel warm and fuzzy, and the Hawaiian scenery is so refreshing. I never get tired of a good romantic comedy set in a dreaming location.
I Still Believe is available on Blu-ray and DVD, or to rent on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play.
