Shania and Dolly help boost grades

Reporter: Andrew Rudkin
Date online: 21 June 2011

Students video a musical guide to revision

STUDENTS have been working nine to five on an educational video aimed at getting their grades up.

The creative short film shows sociology teachers and pupils from Oldham Sixth Form College singing along to country music stars Dolly Parton and Shania Twain.

Youngsters also performed a gangster rap to aid their exam revision.

The idea was brainstormed by lecturers Claire Corrigan and Salim Rahman to help the pupils remember the theorectical perspectives of Marxism, functionalism and feminism.

The clip has been submitted to a national website where pupils around the country can see teachers’ best — and bizarre — methods of revision.

The college is hoping to win £100,000 on the O2 Learn website, which will decide on the best national video in October.

Claire said: “It was about producing creative ideas and to help get the students’ grades up.

“For Marxism we did gangster rap and for functionalism we sang a hymn.

“For feminism we did two songs over two periods of history. One part was in black and white to show 1950s housewives singing Shania Twain’s ‘Man I Feel Like A Woman’, and the other was the present day, depicting high-powered businesswomen, so we sang Dolly Parton’s ‘Nine to Five’.”

To watch the video and vote visit and register at www.o2learn.co.uk, searching for Sociology a Music Revision Guide to Educational Theory.

Canada's gifts to the world this year

Canada Day Top Ten

By Roland Lindala-Haumont and Andre Mayer, CBC News
Posted: Jun 30, 2011 4:43 PM ET

On the occasion of Canada Day, CBCNews.ca thought we would toast the birthday child not by showering it with presents, but rather by looking at what gifts it has bestowed on the world in the first half of 2011.

There have been quite a few, as it turns out.

Here's a list of 10 notable Canadian events and newsmakers who have emerged so far this year — some of them are laudable, others maybe not so much.

10. Man! I feel like a comeback — Shania Twain
Canadian country music songstress Shania Twain has spent most of the past few years out of the limelight after a painful divorce and issues with her voice. But on New Year's Day this year, she turned over a new leaf and married Swiss businessman Frederic Thiebaud. Then in May, she burst back on the scene with a tell-all memoir, From This Moment On, and a show on Oprah Winfrey's new TV channel, OWN. On June 12, Twain released her first new single in six years, called Today is Your Day. A fifth studio album is on its way and Twain has signed up to headline Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas for two years beginning in December 2012.

Pa. jury sees best, worst of starved teen's life

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia jurors hearing a case involving the starvation death of a disabled teen are seeing photos of the best and worst periods of her life.

A Phoenix teacher recalls Danieal (dan-YELL') Kelly as an endearing child who liked school trips and Shania Twain songs. But teacher Lynn Levin says the girl was frequently absent and in need of glasses, despite frequent attempts to talk to her father about the problems.

Daniel Kelly is charged with child endangerment for allegedly abandoning his daughter at her unfit mother's chaotic home. The mother, Andrea Kelly, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder following Danieal's 2006 neglect death.

A city social worker says the debris-filled home was one of the worst he'd ever seen.

Two aid workers are also on trial for allegedly failing the girl.

Mike Napoli Loses a Bet and Has Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like a Women” as Walk Up Music [VIDEO]

By: Sean Cunniff | July 7, 2011

Texas Rangers catcher Mike Napoli lost a bet to Fox Sports Reporter Emily Jones and had to change his walk up song. The specifics of the bet are unknown but it certainly had an impact on Napoli. He went 0 for 4 during the Rangers win that night. This happened  July 7th against the Baltimore Orioles. Napoli is batting .211 on the year with 28 RBI’s with 11 HR’s.

What would you pick as some players walk up songs?

Blake Shelton's record label bosses wanted to shut down his Twitter

While Blake Shelton was in search of “The Voice,” his record label wanted to silence his…by shutting down his Twitter account.

clearpxlShelton’s label bosses at Warner Bros. thought his Twitter messages were overly candid and sometimes offensive, like his tweet where he re-wrote some Shania Twain lyrics to read, "Any man that tries Touching my behind / He's gonna be a beaten, bleedin', heaving kind of guy.”

After the remarks were considered anti-gay, Shelton’s label heads wanted to prevent him from tweeting, something he and the rest of the judges regularly do for “The Voice.”

“There was a point where Warner Bros. was like, 'We've got to get Blake off Twitter, 'cause he can't say these type of things,'" Shelton told the New York Times.

Shelton apologized for his tweets after he was under pressure from critics and groups like GLAAD, but the tweets haven’t seemed to have caused him any distress.

His new album, “Red River Blue,” was just released on Tuesday. Featuring the hit single “Honey Bee,” it’s already at #1 on iTunes and is on its way to a big debut.

"I hope that people learn from me, it's OK to be yourself,” Shelton said. “It's OK to offend somebody, and, as a matter of fact, please be polarizing. If you're not polarizing, you failed in my opinion. If you don't stand for something, how can anyone respect what you do?"

GAC Time Machine: Shania Twain’s “Any Man Of Mine”

It was just about this very same week back in 1995 when Shania Twain hit the top of the Billboard country chart with  “Any Man of Mine,” a song that quickly became an anthem for women everywhere. Written by Shania and her then-husband Mutt Lange, the song was Shania’s very first No. 1 single and also her first crossover hit when it reached the Top 40 on the pop charts.  The song was featured on her multi-platinum selling album, The Woman In Me, which won the 1995 Grammy for Best Country Album and ACM award for Album of the Year.

The video for “Any Man of Mine” was filmed in Santa Ynez, California and directed by John Derek and Charley Randazzo. In the video, Shania is on a ranch, riding horses, herding cattle and driving pickup trucks. She raised eyebrows – and the pulse rates of men everywhere – by wearing jeans and a midriff baring jean vest while dancing around in a field. The video won the Canadian Country Music Award for Video of the Year as well as AOL’s Online Music Award for Hottest Country Video.

Despite Tayor, Shania, Reba, Carrie, Country Radio Is Where the Girls Aren't

By Wade Jessen, Nashville | July 29, 2011

To paraphrase George Strait's No. 5-peaking Hot Country Songs hit from 1992, when it comes to the current state of country radio, female artists are about as gone as a girl can get.

For a second consecutive week, no songs by women billed as lead acts or unaccompanied by a male duet partner rank in the chart's top 30.

How rare is such a female drought in the 60-position chart's top half?

While country radio traditionally has been dominated by male singers, it's actually unprecedented, dating to the list's adoption of Nielsen BDS data the week of Jan. 20, 1990.

Of course, female vocals aren't completely absent from the top 30: Lady Antebellum's Hillary Scott sings on "Just a Kiss" (No. 4); Carrie Underwood shares vocals with Brad Paisley on "Remind Me" (No. 9), as does Grace Potter with Kenny Chesney on "You and Tequila" (No. 10); and, Thompson Square, the duo of husband and wife Keifer and Shawna Thompson, bullets at No. 21 with "I Got You." But still, what gives?

According to WUBL (94.9 The Bull)/Atlanta APD/MD Lance Houston, timing is the main culprit for the current dearth of women on country radio.

"Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Ashton Shepherd, Reba McEntire, Taylor Swift, Kellie Pickler, Sara Evans and LeAnn Rimes are either between singles or just getting started," he said.

"It also doesn't help any that a few of the great females in our format in recent years, like Faith Hill and Shania Twain," have been inactive (Twain) or more prominent on adult radio (Hill).

Radio Panel Attributes Success To 'Difficult Times' at Billboard Country Summit

Although it would be plausible to blame such a shortage of charting solo females on timing and leave it at that, there are other current and retrospective factors to consider, not the least of which is the fact that country radio is and has always been dominated by men.

That gender disparity came closest to parity during the boom period the genre experienced in the first half of the '90s, when it was not uncommon for the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Loveless, Reba McEntire, Pam Tillis and Trisha Yearwood to reach the chart's summit.

When the format cooled in the mid-'90s -- parallel to the slowdown in output of Garth Brooks', Nielsen SoundScan's all-time best selling album artist with 68.5 million units to date) -- women lost much of the ground they had gained during the decade's earlier explosion.

Country radio experienced a second, although less sustainable, boom following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, but the format's female acts took a back seat to the testosterone-fueled themes of jingoistic isolationism and wistful longing for a return to cultural and religious fundamentalism. In fact, over a two-year period in that period (2002-04), not one solo female act topped Hot Country Songs.

Conventional wisdom along Nashville's Music Row holds that women are excruciatingly difficult to break as artists -- although when they do emerge forcefully, the payoff can be astronomical, as in the careers of Shania Twain in the '90s and Taylor Swift today.

Throughout the entire history of country-formatted radio, however, music made by women has been largely viewed by programmers as experimental and non-essential. Perhaps new thinking by the format's gatekeepers is needed for more women to grace current, and future, country airwaves.

"I think men forget that the role of women in America has changed tenfold from a decade or two ago," says KKGO (Go Country 105 FM) Los Angeles PD Tonya Campos. "Men's roles in society, arts and music have basically maintained forward movement while many, many women have gone from the kitchen to the mainstream workforce.

"The lack of women on the country chart has more to do with song selection and subject matter than it does with talent," Campos theorizes.

"There are so many talented women in country music that I find it hard to comprehend why more of their music is not making it to the top."

Technology may also be impacting women's overall lack of current chart momentum.

Country radio's audience composition is heavily dominated by adult women and, more often than not, they prefer tough-but-tender male singers over attractive female acts to deliver the messages that speak to them most effectively. As Arbitron's Portable People Meter (PPM) continues to be more broadly deployed, programmers are measuring tune-out minute-by-minute, not on a quarter-hour basis per the decades-old diary recall system - and that new ratings measurement methodology makes many of radio's programmers skittish about alienating the adult females who are so attractive to advertising clients.

Still, Campos believes that female artists, although outnumbered and disproportionately scrutinized by many programmers, are essential to mass-appeal radio programming.

"When you see a song like (Evans') "A Little Bit Stronger" or (Lambert's) "The House That Built Me" performing extraordinarily well [both tracks topped Hot Country Songs since the start of 2010; in that span, just 11 of 42 leaders have sported female vocals, including hits by groups - Lady Antebellum, the Band Perry - featuring women singers], you start to piece together that songs speaking about the strength of women, or women becoming someone they can be proud of, are the messages that cut through."

The paucity of women in the chart's top 30 should end next week: eight songs by solo female artists place in the bottom half of the chart, led by Swift's "Sparks Fly," which looks likely to break into the top 30, as it ignites 39-31 in its third frame this week.

Pickler's "Tough" follows at No. 34, Evans' "My Heart Can't Tell You No" bullets at No. 41 and Sunny Sweeney's "Staying's Worse Than Leaving" - another song about women's empowerment - rises 43-42.

Shania has roots in Newbridge (Ireland)

THE award winning country singer Shania Twain may well have her roots firmly placed in Newbrige according to the Newbridge Mayor.

Mayor Damian Molyneaux annouced the revelation at this month’s Newbridge Town Council meeting.

“Shania Twain’s granny was from Newbridge,” he said. “I think her name was Pearse.”

Councillors failed to comment on the significance of the matter and moved swiftly on after it was agreed that it could be looked into. According to Wikipedia however, the Candian singer-songwriter’s maternal grandmother is called Eilleen Pearse and did indeed emigrate from Newbridge. And the Grammy Award Winner was orginally named Eilleen, presumbably after her Lilywhite granny.

Meanwhile for any Shania wanabees, a Glee Workshop will take place at Newbridge Library from 2 to 6 Auguust. The workshop which is for library members is free of charge and is for girls and boys aged 7 – 14yrs. It will run each morning 10.30am – 12.30pm. Participants will give a performance for family and friends on the last day.

In 1996, country singer Shania Twain was honoured at a homecoming in the northern Ontario town of Timmins. The former Timmins resident was presented with the key to the city, pressed her hands into cement and was shown a plaque renaming the city's Algonquin Boulevard to Shania Twain Way. Twain became an international star after her 1995 album "The Woman in Me" sold more than eight-million copies.

Why music is in tune with exercise

as workout intensity increases, so does the preference for uptempo songs, according to a sports psychologist

By JILL BARKER, Freelance August 25, 2011

Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine" is my go-to song. It's the one I turn to during a run when my energy starts to wane. It's not a song I listen to outside of a run, but it's just what I need when the going gets tough.

Turns out there's some science behind the concept of a go-to song. Researchers have determined that music can increase aerobic endurance, aid in the enjoyment of exercise, reduce the perception of effort and increase the ability to sustain muscular effort. In short, the right music can make exercise feel easier and better.

It isn't exactly news that music is a motivator. The explosion of dance aerobics in the '80s was based on the powerful combination of music and exercise. Fitness instructors spent hours choosing the right songs to motivate the masses. A catchy tune with a steady beat - the Pointer Sisters' Jump (For My Love), for instance - not only set the right tone, it allowed exercisers to synchronize their movements with the music.

Why music has the power to motivate is complicated. What's important is the science behind the kind of song that provides the boost you need when your exercise mojo begins to lag.

Preliminary research suggested that exercisers instinctively choose songs that match their heart rate, which seemed to have merit. As exercise intensity increases, so does heart rate. And as most exercisers will tell you, the best motivational music has a corresponding increase in speed.

Costas Karageorghis, a sports psychologist from the U.K., specializes in analyzing the power of music as an exercise motivator. He suggests that good motivational music is decided by four qualities: tempo or speed of music as measured by beats per minute (BPM), musicality (harmony and melody), cultural impact (the popularity of music within society) and the association of a piece of music to other feelings, like those evoked when you hear the theme from Rocky or Chariots of Fire.

To test the theory of whether musical preference is linked to matching tempo with heartbeat, Karageorghis examined the musical preference of 29 university students while they exercised at three different intensities (40, 60 and 75 per cent of maximum heart rate) while listening to three different speeds of music (80, 120 and 140 BPM). In an effort to standardize the music selection, all songs featured the same artist and were considered similar in their motivational qualities.

The results determined that fast and medium-tempo music was preferred during workouts done at all three intensities, with fast music gaining in popularity as exercise intensity increased.

Karageorghis recommends songs with 120 to 140 BPM during medium-to high-intensity exercise - which, incidentally, is the speed of most commercially produced dance music. As exercise intensity in-creases, a tempo closer to 140 BPM produces the greatest level of motivation.

If those uptempo songs also include lyrics with positive affirmations, like Justin Bieber's Never Say Never, the effect on exercise is even greater. Add to that the enjoyment factor of a favourite artist, and you have the recipe for a perfect go-to song.

There is a caveat to all of this, however: Not all exercisers are motivated by music.

A 1995 study by Brownley, McMurray and Hackney looked at the effects of music on nine recreational and nine elite athletes. Interestingly, the highly trained exercisers found the presence of music disturbing, preferring to listen to the cues of their body. That's contrary to the response of the recreational exercisers, who, like the subjects in similar studies, used music to drown out the messages their body was sending.

The power of music to distract us from the discomfort associated with increased physical effort is why we choose music over silence and fast songs over ballads while working up a sweat.

Karageorghis says music can even help us get off the couch. He suggests that listening to mediumtempo music before a workout initiates an arousal factor sufficient to motivate exercisers to head to the gym. That arousal factor is what athletes count on when they listen to music in order to get pumped up before meeting their competition.

Yet despite the proven power of music, some marathons have barred the use of MP3 players. They believe too much distraction from the task at hand will cause runners to stumble or bump into each other during the race.

Karageorghis doesn't buy that argument. In fact, he selects the live music played during the Run to the Beat marathon in London - music that event organizers boast will help boost performance.

With all this in mind, exercisers may want to take a look at their own playlist and tweak it for better results.

At the very least, you may want to consider adding Rocky's theme song, Gonna Fly Now, which Karageorghis says is one of the most popular of all go-to exercise songs.

Back where it all began
Michelle Wright returns to be inducted into the Canadian Country Hall of Fame

by Graham Rockingham | Sat Aug 27 2011

The Gladstone Tavern in Hamilton’s east end may seem like an unlikely place for the launch of a Hall of Fame career in country music.

But that’s where Michelle Wright got her start.

It was back in 1985. Wright was a young up-and-comer from the tiny southwestern Ontario town of Merlin, near Chatham, still in her early 20s, playing the country bar circuit. Her booking agent, Marilyn Caswell, had heard Toronto agent Brian Ferriman was looking for a new act.

“She sent him a demo I had done of Mama He’s Crazy (by the Judds),” Wright says from her home near Nashville. “He was intrigued by my voice and he came to see me perform … at the Gladstone.

“It was a hot spot,” says Wright, who will be inducted into the Canadian Country Hall of Fame at a gala dinner Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Hamilton Convention Centre as part of Country Music Week festivities (Sept. 8 to 12).

“I remember all the dingy places I used to play. I think the Gladstone was one of the higher-end places I was playing at that time. I do remember it. I met some lovely people there who became big fans. Some of them, I still stay in contact with.”

That meeting with Ferriman went well. It resulted in a record deal that would make Wright an international sensation. Ferriman was a big deal. He had his own label, Savannah Records, and would be named manager of the year at the Canadian Country Music Association Awards, eight times during the ’80s and early ’90s.

The Wright and Ferriman partnership resulted in her 1988 debut album Do Right By Me, which broke her in Canada and caught the attention of Nashville. Her self-titled followup cracked the U.S. charts with New Kind of Love and led to a move to Nashville. Her third produced Take It Like a Man, a huge international hit. She was named new artist of the year at the Country Music Awards and performed on American network TV. She continued to score top-10 hits in Canada throughout the ’90s, but never again achieved that kind of success in the U.S.

Now, at 50, Wright continues to record and perform. She has a new live/acoustic album coming out this fall and will perform 20 dates in Canada as part of her popular Christmas tour.

She’s looking forward to playing a few songs, just her and her guitar, as part of the Canadian Country Music Awards Fan Fest Saturday afternoon on the rooftop court of Jackson Square. It’s a free show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring some of Canada’s top country acts.

After more than 25 years since that night at the Gladstone, Wright still works with Ferriman. On Sunday, it will be Ferriman at the microphone making the presentation as she’s inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“I have always trusted Brian. We have always trusted each other. We haven’t always been right, that’s for sure. You put an idea and a plan together and you go for it. It’s either going to work — and you’re brilliant, or fail. Then you’ve got to move on to the next thing.”

In the mid-90s, Wright’s career was eclipsed by a new up-and-comer, Shania Twain. Ironically, Wright was the host at the 1994 Canadian Country Music Awards at Hamilton Place when Twain swept four main categories.

“I had already won four years in a row,” she says. “I’m totally cool with that, you’ve got to pass on the torch.”

Wright still remembers her early years fondly. She appreciates the fact that she always receives a warm reception in Hamilton from people like Cliff Dumas, the former morning host at CHAM radio.

“Cliff would let me on there and I’d sing my favourite Merle Haggard songs like Natural High and That’s the Way Love Goes,” she recalls. “Back in those days, they would give an artist like me a chance on the morning show to promote the fact that I was playing a club in town and let me play a couple of songs on my guitar.”

In those days, she never doubted success would come.

“It never crossed my mind that I wouldn’t succeed. That’s how naïve I was,” she laughs. “I think that’s what it takes. I think you have to see it and believe it. I never thought that it wasn’t impossible. I think you need that kind of naivety to even begin this kind of a career.”

She acknowledges that it’s a much harder business now for young performers.

“When I was coming up I could make a living playing in clubs six nights a week,” Wright says. “I could do what I love to do with these dreams and goals in mind and I could pay my rent.

“Kids these days, they don’t have that. There’s not those clubs for them to play. So they have to do a side job while they’re trying to find their way into the music business. I think that’s very challenging.”

She also says the pressures and temptations are greater on artists today in a business that expects new singers to score gold records on their first try.

“When I was starting out, they didn’t give record deals until you had something to offer that was unique … you had to develop that and find that. There’s a lot of pressure on these kids today to have that before they’re 25.”

Wright is aware of how performers can fall victim to temptation at that age. She admits she had to give up drinking in the late ’80s to focus on her career.

“I was able to sow my wild oats before. We partied until the sun came up. I wouldn’t trade any of that, but I’m glad that I (ended) it before it really destroyed me. I was heading down that road. I am a recovering alcoholic and haven’t drank in some 23 years. It’s amazing just to be able to say that. My how time flies.

“I am 50, aren’t I? Woo hoo!”

Today in Music History - Aug. 28

The Canadian Press
Sun, 28 Aug 2011

In 1965, country singer Shania Twain was born Eilleen Regina Edwards in Windsor, Ont. Growing up in Timmins, Ont., she began her music career as the headline vocalist in musical productions at a northern Ontario resort. Focusing on country music, she recorded a demo tape in Nashville in 1991 followed by her first album. But it was her 1994 followup, "The Woman In Me," that made Twain a major international star with more than 10 million albums sold and four Top 10 country hits. That album was her first with her producer, songwriting partner and now ex-husband Robert "Mutt" Lange. Twain's 1997 album, "Come On Over" was even more of a smash, with such hit tracks as "You're Still The One," "From This Moment On", "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman." By March 2000, that album was confirmed as both the best-selling album in country music history, and the best-selling album ever by a female artist. Twain has won several awards including Grammys, Junos and American Music Awards.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Shania Twain

By: Billy Dukes

Happy birthday to Shania Twain! OK, her birthday was actually on Sunday, August 28, but we've got a really good excuse for being late. Some of us were without power thanks to Hurricane Irene, so today we're wishing Twain a good year with a list of 10 things you probably didn't know about her.

It's hard to believe the country superstar is 46-years-old this year. There's no doubt she's the most successful female country artist of all time. Her fans are itching for her to make a recording comeback, but for now it seems the only gift she has for us is a Las Vegas show that doesn't begin until 2012. At the CMT Awards earlier this year, Twain boasted about feeling more confident than she had in years. So Shania, if you're reading this, happy birthday. Treat yourself by having a little you time in the recording studio.

10 She once was asking, “Would you like fries with that?”
In high school, Shania Twain no doubt uttered this phrase hundreds of times as she worked the counter at McDonald's. In 2002, she told Time Magazine that she learned about the meaning of service while spending time beneath the golden arches. To this day, she calls french fries the only junk food she'll touch.

9 We probably won't be hearing 'You're Still the One' at her 2012 Las Vegas concerts.
Twain and former husband/producer Mutt Lange wrote the song in response to critics saying their marriage would never last. Less than a decade later, Lange's wandering eye proved to be the couple's undoing. It was the beginning of a dark time that Twain is unlikely to want to revisit.

8 Her stage fright once caused an embarrassing puddle.
In her new memoir, 'From This Moment On,' Twain admits she struggles with stage fright. In fact, she once wet her pants in school, but covered the mess by spilling a glass of water. ''As far as the trumpet players on either side of me knew, the puddle … was nothing more than H2O!'' Twain writes. On the list of things the singer has overcome, this one seems pretty minor.

7 She wanted to be a rock star.
In the mid-'80s, Twain insisted that she wanted to be a pop or rock singer, not country. In early 1987, she performed at the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation with Bernadette Peters. Somehow this show convinced her boyfriend/manager that she should steer her music towards country. Nine months later, her parents were killed in a car accident, putting all of her musical ventures on hold. In a 2005 biography, writer Robin Eggars explains how Twain cared for her siblings until they were old enough to move out in the early '90s.

6 She probably should have divorced Mutt Lange because of his nickname for her.
Mutt Lange used to call his wife “Woody.” It was an affectionate nickname that derived from a hairdo Twain used to rock that reminded him of Woody Woodpecker. The producer was clearly the less physically gifted of the two, so perhaps he should have been a little more complimentary. “Goddess” or “Gorgeous” would have been more appropriate.

5 She enjoys a “rugged existence.”
McDonald's wasn't the only hands-on employment Twain knew growing up. She also worked for her father's reforestation business. “I loved the feeling of being stranded,” she says in a 2005 biography. “I'm not afraid of being in my own environment, being physical, working hard. I was very strong, I walked miles and miles every day and carried heavy loads of trees. You can't shampoo, use soap or deodorant,or makeup, nothing with any scent; you have to bathe and rinse your clothes in the lake. It was a very rugged existence, but I was very creative and I would sit alone in the forest with my dog and a guitar and would just write songs.”

4 Her record label asked her to change her last name.
Twain's birth name is Eilleen Regina Edwards, but her step-father, Jerry Twain, adopted her when she was 4-years-old. Mercury didn't think Eilleen Twain flowed well, so they asked her to change her last name. Instead, she became Shania Twain professionally (Shania is Ojibwa for “I'm on my way”), although she's still known as Eilleen in personal circles. It's difficult to imagine a country superstar named Eilleen, isn't it?

3 She was presumed dead on arrival.
Twain shares that doctors gave up on her before she had a chance to take her first breath. In her memoir, she writes, ''While [Sharon, her mother] lies on the delivery table, the doctor quietly hands her a cigarette and lights it … She's delivered a blue baby, stillborn. Except, miraculously, the baby girl is alive!'' That quote is also a glimpse into birthing rooms in the 1960s. Doctors were lighting cigarettes for patients?

2 She's gone intergalactic.
Twain's song 'Up!' was used to wake up astronauts, specifically Canadian astronaut Dave Williams in 2007. It's not the first time a Shania song has been blasted into the cosmos. In 2001, her hit 'Honey, I'm Home' woke up members of the Space Shuttle Atlantis crew.

1 Sean Penn was an early financial backer.
It was only $100, but it came at a time the singer needed it most. Twain admits in her 2011 memoir that the actor contacted her to direct the 'Dance With the One That Brought You' video. The song, from her 1993 self-titled album, didn't do much, and it wasn't until two years later that 'Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under' became her first hit. ''I was embarrassed to receive a handout like that,” she admits.

Four Ways that 9/11 Changed Country Music

by Kevin John Coyne

September 12, 2011

The terrorist attacks on American soil ten years ago changed the course of our nation’s history in far more significant ways than just its impact on country music.

But the fact is that country music was changed as well.  Here are the four biggest ways that it did, for better and for worse.

1. Alan Jackson Becomes a Legend

He was still getting solid radio airplay and record sales in 2001, but it seemed like his glory days were behind him. Then, he stepped on to the CMA Awards stage and debuted “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” to a stunned industry crowd on national television.

It was the perfect song by the perfect artist at the perfect time, and it launched an amazing return to the head of the pack.  The commercial success was great, but it’s worth noting that “Where Were You” served notice that he was undergoing an artistic renaissance as well.   The big hits that followed – “Drive (For Daddy Gene)”, “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere,” and “Remember When” – were the best of his career.  Heck, of anybody’s career.

2. Toby Keith Becomes a Superstar

On the same night that Jackson performed his instant classic, Toby Keith just sang his latest hit, the novelty number “I Wanna Talk About Me.”  But the following spring, he came out with the next quintessential post-9/11 anthem, “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.”

While it didn’t lead to nearly the same level of artistic growth that Jackson experienced, it did launch Keith into the rarefied air of country superstardom.  For most of the next decade, he’d be an instant add at radio.  And if some of those hits made us wince, it was still great to see the finest male vocalist of his generation get his due.   For those of us who thought that he was robbed at radio and industry award shows in the nineties, it was rewarding to see him have his day.

3. The Politicization of Country Music

National unity began to fade in the run up to our invasion of Iraq, and country radio picked a side, much to the detriment of the format.  The shamelessly jingoistic “Have You Forgotten?” became a seven week #1 for Darryl Worley, while a criticism of President Bush wiped the Dixie Chicks off of the radio dial.

The upshot?  Country radio sent the message that if you weren’t on board with the Bush Administration, you better keep your mouth shut.   Then again, with Worley’s career fading soon after “Have You Forgotten?”, opening it was no guarantee for long-term success, either.

4. Female Domination of the Genre Evaporates

This was the worst of it.   Country record sales exploded in 2002, and the industry credited it to traditionalists Jackson and Keith.   Radio drew the conclusion that  listeners didn’t want any more pop-flavored country, despite the fact that two of the biggest selling albums of the year were by Shania Twain and Faith Hill.

Both ladies struggled at radio with their top-selling projects, and the careers of Lee Ann Womack and SHeDaisy nearly ended.   Even ten years later, with the top-selling artists being Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood, most female artists are still struggling to get radio play.

Secrets of a Cover MeGeorgia Murray started out washing dishes and singing at her parents' resort

By Mike Devlin, Times Colonist

It's been a long journey from the living room of her family's fishing resort near Port McNeill to a live television stage in Toronto, but Georgia Murray is finally ready for her close-up.

The chipper 27-year-old, who moved to Victoria from Mill Bay, where she attended high school, almost a decade ago, has been named to the cast of "Cover Me Canada," CBC Television's live music competition series which airs Sunday nights.

Murray is one of eight contestants vying for the program's $100,000 top prize, awarded to the performer who best performs a series of iconic Canadian songs. Murray describes her music as alt-soul with an urban influence - styles that are a good distance from Shania Twain's hit Up, the song producers asked her to cover Sunday night during "Cover Me Canada"'s inaugural episode.

"I nearly lost it," Murray said with a laugh, recalling from the set of "Cover Me Canada" her reaction to the country-pop tune. "We all did. I was expecting some old Neil Young tune. Nope. We get straight-up pop country. This is going to be completely crazy."

Far from fish out of water, Murray and her band appear to be right at home on set. Because members of her group - which includes Tony Day, David Parfit, Kytami, Jayme Langen, and Travis Nelson - are older than some of their competitors, their collective experience is a big factor in their favour, Murray says.

"We're all grounded, we know who we are and I'm not going to get lost in a process like this and lose my voice," she said. "It's not like I sing in my shower and I'm suddenly auditioning for a show. We've been trying to make it happen for a while."

Murray and Day, a producer and DJ known to Victorians as DWhiz, have been a couple for eight years, all of which they have spent making moves for a career in music. The drive to be creative has always been a priority for her and Day. "We started from nothing. Nobody taught us - we just bought equipment and taught ourselves."

Murray was born in Port McNeill and raised at her family's nearby fishing resort, Nimmo Bay. It was an idyllic childhood for Murray, who still works for the family business (she's in charge of reservations and guest services) from her home in Victoria.

Believe it or not, Nimmo Bay did wonders for her creative abilities, she says.

"We'd spend our summers dishwashing, housekeeping, serving, and of course, singing. I would be scrubbing dishes in my crappy uniform, with orange gloves on, and then I'd have to go in the front room and perform with my dad on guitar for the guests."

Her father, Craig, had a big musical influence on Murray. He introduced her to the greats, from Johnny Cash to John Prine, whose songs have stayed with her to this day. Murray was happy to report that her audition for Cover Me Canada included a cover of Cash's Folsom Prison Blues.

When it was time for her to enroll in high school, she headed south on Vancouver Island to Brentwood College in Mill Bay. She made an important contact the first day in Ashleigh Eymann, who remains her best friend. The pair moved after graduation to Victoria, where they started the group Divinity before branching out as solo acts.

Murray has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. She performed at a private party for billionaire Warren Buffett, and has sung at both NBA and NHL games, including one in New York's Madison Square Garden. She also appeared in an episode of Boston Legal - producer/writer David E. Kelley met Murray while staying at Nimmo Bay - and she had one of her songs (as covered by a Korean pop star) hit the top of the Korean charts.

In June, she released a six-song EP, Just a Dream, which Day produced. She initially rebuffed a suggestion by her brother, Clifton - a member of the rapidly rising group the Canadian Tenors - that she audition for Cover Me Canada. (Coincidentally, as Georgia was wowing judges on CBC, brother Clifton was performing with the Tenors on Sunday night's Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.)

Though she isn't a fan of singing reality shows, what intrigued her about the CBC production was the focus on the creative process, and the artistry of covering a song. "There's no house band," she says. "We get to come and do our own vibe, and put our own twist on these covers."

Since being named a contestant, Murray's life has been hectic, to say the least. Before she flew out to Toronto two weeks ago, producers shot a back story segment in Nimmo Bay. "I had to drive home from Nimmo on Thursday night and got home about 2 a.m. I left Friday morning for Toronto, and the rest of the band came Saturday night on a red-eye and got here first thing Sunday morning."

Hours later, Murray and the group were in a fourhour rehearsal, followed by more of the same the day after that. They recorded their studio version of Twain's Up in a quick five-hour session. That was the difficult and bothersome part for Murray and Day. "We've been recording for six years now, and usually I'm a part of the production process. But I basically had to record my vocals and hand everything over to the show's producers and engineers."

Murray's version of Up is available on iTunes. While sales have nothing to do with the contest, her ability to secure votes via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube does play into the final decision of judges, singer Deborah Cox, producer Ron Fair and Jordan Knight of New Kids on the Block.

It's too early to tell how she'll fare, Murray says. But no matter what, she's going to ride the experience for all it's worth. "This is something I'm passionate about. Regardless of how it goes, I'm going to be doing it."

Wedding Recap: A Look Back at This Year's Most Intimate Ceremonies

By Grace Shreve, Yahoo! Contributor Network - September 22, 2011 1:58 PM PDT

After millions tuned in to watch the royal wedding, and Kim Kardashian turned her nuptials into a full-blown media circus, many celebrity weddings have become more public spectacle than private event.

While fans tend to revel in stars' luxurious preparations and hang on every extravagant wedding-day detail, not all celebs are eager to celebrate on such a grand scale. With so many highly-publicized weddings making headlines, it's easy to forget some of the smaller, low-key ceremonies that took place this year. Excluding courthouse civil ceremonies, here's a look back at some of this year's "little weddings that could."

"Dream House" costars Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig first went public with their romance in February 2011, when the two sipped champagne, kissed, and danced at an NYC restaurant on Valentine's Day. In June, the two stars wed in upstate New York, managing to pull off a completely private ceremony. According to reports, only four people attended the intimate nuptials, including two friends, Weisz' son Henry (5), and Craig's daughter Ella (18), both from previous relationships. When asked how he kept his wedding a secret, Craig answered coyly, "I did it secretly--I can't tell you how I pulled it off. My private life is incredibly important to me, and certainly that aspect of it is more than incredibly important to me."

In May, Sarah Palin's son Track married his high school sweetheart, Britta Hanson, in Hatcher Pass, Alaska. Clad in jeans, the bride and groom were all smiles while posing with their parents in front of the snow-covered mountains. At the time, the couple announced their intention to have a larger, formal ceremony later in the year, "when extended family and friends from the Lower 48 can travel north for a long ski weekend." So, why not just wait? Three months later, Britta gave birth to the couple's first child, a daughter named Kyla Grace.

In May, actress Ashley Williams of "Something Borrowed" and "How I Met Your Mother" married her boyfriend of eight years, producer Neal Dodson. The two wed at the Nashville home of country singer Brad Paisley and reportedly exchanged rings they bought online. For the outdoor reception, guests donned their party favor flip-flops, sipped beer, and dined on pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, and biscuits. Instead of the traditional wedding cake, the couple opted to finish things off with banana pudding. The down-to-earth bride told People , "We wanted an intimate, farm-inspired wedding. We basically planned an upscale keg party!"

In February, "Chuck" star Sarah Lancaster exchanged vows with her boyfriend of two years, attorney Matthew Jacobs. Though their Southern California wedding was small, it was certainly big on tradition; Sarah wore her grandmother's gold heirloom bracelet and her mother's pearl earrings, while Matthew sported his father's 3-piece, circa 1960s wedding suit. In June, the couple welcomed their first child, a son named Oliver Michael Jacobs, who arrived weighing 8 pounds, 7 ounces.

After 29 years of waiting, "The View" cohost Joy Behar finally married her "spousal equivalent" Steve Janowitz. The two wed in August, in a private ceremony in New York City. The bride discussed the wedding on her show's September 6 season premiere, showing pictures of the intimate, family-only gathering. While the groom wore a tux, Behar opted for a short, black dress to tie the knot, and she revealed that she now wears a wedding band that once belonged to her mother.

Country music superstar Shania Twain kicked off the new year by tying the knot in Puerto Rico. She and husband Frederic Thiebaud became involved after learning of Twain's husband's affair with Thiebaud's wife Marie-Ann, who was Twain's employee and close friend. With a mere 40 guests in attendance, including Twain's son Eja (9) and Thiebaud's daughter Johanna (9), the couple said their vows on the beach at Rincon's Ocean Villa. According to a guest, when the two were pronounced man and wife, "Fred picked her up and kissed her. He was jumping for joy. It was tearful, beautiful."

Congratulations to all the couples! We wish you a lifetime of love and happiness.

Come On Over: all about Shania Twain

The Ojibway meaning of the name Shania is , ” I’m on my way”

Eilleen Regina Edwards was born in Windsor, Ontario on August 28, 1965 and has been ‘on her way’ ever since.

Her childhood was anything but easy.  Eilleen’s parents eventually got divorced, and her mother remarried Jerry Twain, who adopted Eilleen and her sisters, Jill and Carrie Ann. The girls changed their last names to Twain, and eventually either half brother, Mark, was added to the family. There house in Timmins, Ontario often lacked food, and violent fights broke out between Sharon and Jerry.  At the age of eight, Twain started singing at bars to make around $20 a night.

She later spend time working for her father’s reforestation business, loving the outdoors. Twain once said “I loved the feeling of being stranded. I’m not afraid of being in my own environment, being physical, working hard. I was very strong, I walked miles and miles every day and carried heavy loads of trees. You can’t shampoo, use soap or deodorant, or makeup, nothing with any scent; you have to bathe and rinse your clothes in the lake. It was a very rugged existence, but I was very creative and I would sit alone in the forest with my dog and a guitar and would just write songs.”

The country singer gained her fame slowly, waiting to be discovered, as so many musicians do.  She had been in a number of cover bands, until suddenly her mother and father were killed in a car accident, leaving her to take care of her three younger siblings. The family moved to Huntsville, Ontario where Twain worked at Deerhurst Resort until they could all live on their own.

It wasn’t until the mid nineties when she was noticed by Mercury Nashville Records, and changed her name to the better fitting, Shania.  She has been making albums ever since! Four albums altogether, titled Shania Twain, The Woman in Me, Come on Over, and in 2002 released Up! She even came out with a Greatest Hills Album in 2004.

Racking up a dozens of  Billboard Top 40 charted songs, including 11 from Come on Over alone, Shania Twain is one of the greatest female country singers in history.  However, she hasn’t released anything new in over almost twelve years.

Shania has announced that her show, Why Not? With Shania Twain, will debut on the Oprah Network, May 8, 2011.  Twain also released a single, Today is Your Day, to go along with the new series. She is slowly but surely creeping back into the hearts of fans all over the world, and even recently published an autobiography; From This Moment On.

What do you think of her new single? Will you be watching Why Not? Leave a comment!

Why did they post this article now? Five months late!

Adele and Gotye become ARIA greats

The West Australian
October 5, 2011

English songstress Adele and homegrown chart-topper Gotye have made history this week.

Adele's sophomore smash-hit album, 21, notches an epic 20 weeks on top of the national ARIA charts, joining Shania Twain's Come On Over as the fourth longest-running No. 1 in the hit list's history.

Only Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms, John Farnham's Whispering Jack and Delta Goodrem's Innocent Eyes have spent more time at the peak.

The ARIA Singles chart sees Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know, featuring Kimbra, take out the top spot for the eighth consecutive week to become the longest-running Australian No. 1 since Savage Garden's Truly Madly Deeply.

Eagle Rock from Daddy Cool was the last Australian single to earn a greater run at the pinnacle, way back in 1971.

Strange!

Country California Interviews Shania Twain

We recently sat down with Shania Twain for a revealing discussion concerning chronic constipation, Dungeons and Dragons, and the woman she admires.

You can listen in on our chat through the Youtube player below.

* Some of Shania’s responses have been edited for length and/or content… oh, and all the questions were changed. And we probably didn’t actually speak to her. But other than that, this is exactly how it went down.

Where will Whoopi Goldberg get her hats?

By Rita Zeka

Accessity accessories boutique is closing shop at 136 Cumberland St. after 32 years.

“Whoopi bought 16 hats one year,” recalls owner Oriella Stillo.

Celebrities from Halle Berry to Carol Burnett shopped at Accessity for yummy costume jewellery, Italian gloves and scarves, hosiery, statement belts and bits and pieces of clothing.

Shania Twain bought Avindy, a jewellery line featuring semi-precious stones. Keanu Reeves bought gifts for his mother and sister.

“Who didn’t shop here?” asks Stillo. “Marcello Mastroianni did. So did everyone from Heather Locklear to Jennifer Love Hewitt, who came in every second day when she was here shooting.” Barbara Amiel Black buys all of her tights at the shop, she adds.

The deal breaker was renewing the lease. Stillo would be locked in for another decade.

“He is a wonderful landlord. It has nothing to do with him,” Stillo says. “I asked myself if I still wanted to do this for another 10 years.”

The retail landscape has changed enormously over three decades, says Stillo. “This area 30 years ago was made up of independent stores. The chains came in and took over Bloor St.”

The shuttering of small, independent retailers like Accessity is bad news for the young Canadian designers Stillo nurtured. Her shop was the first to carry Toronto jewellery designer Rita D, for example.

“Who else is going to mentor the young talent?,” she demands. “The face of retail these days is really, really high end or really, really low end. Target is coming; Marshalls is here. The indie retailers are disappearing. ” .

And chain stores don’t offer the same the personalized service either, says Stillo.

“I will talk to people, make them an espresso. I remember what they bought and tell them, ‘No, you don’t need that.’ That kind of service is gone.”

Regular client Janice Kussner, chic in red coat and a Christopher Kon handbag she purchased at Accessity, has been shopping there since 1986.

“Accessity is an outstanding retailer and merchandiser,” she says. “You come here and it feels like home – I’ve come in just to say hello. I never felt any pressure to buy. ”

Stillo is mulling over her future. “I’ll do something; I can’t sit still. I’ll take the summer off for the first time in my life. I have been working since I was 15.”

Stillo stresses she is not bankrupt. “I operated with integrity and I am closing with integrity. All suppliers will be paid. I have a clean slate and a good reputation. If I decide to do something again, it will be an asset.”

Acccessity is having a going-out-of-business sale with items reduced from 30 to 70 per cent off.

“I have the lease until April,” Stillo says. “If I sell out earlier, I will leave earlier. The landlord is so accommodating.”

But over at UPC, the edgy, New-York-meets-Queen-West boutique at 128 ½ Cumberland St. – closing at the end of January – the landlord isn’t so compliant.

“It is the end of the lease,” explains co-owner Maha Zeibak, who opened five years ago with partner Anat Lowe. “We signed the lease when the economy was at its height. Eight months later, the recession hit and the landlord wouldn’t budge to reflect the times.”

Canadian lines like Chloe Comme Parris, Travis Taddeo, Paris Li and Heidi Ackerman will have to find another home.

UPC is on sale at 30 per cent off, with 50 off starting Boxing Day.

“The experience has been incredible,” Zeibak says. “We are both leaving feeling good about what we have accomplished. We will be back. We will do something in Toronto – something exciting, different and creative.”

2011 Rewind: No. 8 – Martina, Sara, Shania & Faith Return

By Sarah Wyland

This year saw the return of four of country music’s biggest female stars: Martina McBride, Sara Evans, Shania Twain and Faith Hill.

Martina changed records labels and released her first new album, Eleven, since 2009. The album spawned the hits “Teenage Daughters” and “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.” Martina celebrated the release by embarking on a cross-country train tour, which ended with a special performance at the Empire State Building.

“This is such an amazing time in my life and my career,” Martina said when she announced her new album’s release. “I feel like I’ve been given the support and power to go into the studio and write and create an album that pushes the boundaries of what people expect of me, while still being true to myself.”

Sara released her first new music since 2005’s Real Fine Place when Stronger hit store shelves on March 8. The album featured the No. 1 hit CMA-nominated hit “A Little Bit Stronger,” which was also a part of the movie Country Strong. Sara also returned to the road, touring with Rascal Flatts on their Flatts Fest summer tour and performed on both the ACM and CMA Awards.

“This song has had the biggest emotional response of any other single I’ve ever released,” Sara said after “A Little Bit Stronger” reached No. 1. “I think it is because almost everyone has gone through a difficult time in their life and most people can relate to the line in the song ‘even on my weakest days, I get a little bit stronger.’”

Shania made her return to CMA Music Festival for the first time in 15 years to sign copies of her autobiography, From This Moment On. She also released her first single in six year, “Today Is Your Day,” and had a reality show, Why Not? With Shania Twain, on OWN. Shania will return to the stage when she begins a two-year headlining stand at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on December 1, 2012.

“This past year has been such an amazing journey and to find myself poised to play at The Colosseum is truly magical,” Shania said. “The Colosseum is an iconic location with unmatched energy, and I’m excited to bring a pop/country spin to the city. People from all over the world travel to Las Vegas and I’m so thrilled to be able to share my music with a truly global audience.”

Faith also returned to both the radio and the stage in 2011. She released her first new single in five years, “Come Home,” which she premiered with a performance during the CMA Awards in November. “It’s such a great song,” Faith said. “So well written – a beautiful lyric and sentiment – combined with a driving musical undertone and instrumentation. I’m really excited for fans of country radio to hear the song.”

Martina will tour with George Strait in 2012 while Sara will re-join Rascal Flatts on their Thaw Out tour. Shania will resume performing in Vegas and Faith is expected to release a new album.

Today in Music History - Jan. 1

The Canadian Press

In 2010, thousands of fans cheered on country music superstar Shania Twain as she carried the Olympic Flame into Hollinger Park in her home town of Timmins, Ont. She donated her Olympic torch and clothing to the town's Shania Twain Centre.

In 2011, Canadian country music superstar Shania Twain and businessman Frederic Thiebaud wed in a small ceremony in Rincon, Puerto Rico with 40 close family and friends in attendance. In 2009, Twain broke up with husband Robert "Mutt" Lange amid reports that he had an affair with Twain’s best friend and Thiebaud’s wife, Marie-Ann.

The Myth of the Attractive Mistress

By Samara O'Shea (Author, "Daydream Believer")
Posted: 1/7/12

When a man is unfaithful, it's not as cut and dry as "I need a prettier woman in my life." He's usually fulfilling a deeper psychological desire. The male ego is a hungry beast -- if it doesn't feel it's getting the attention it needs, it will go hunting. The source of the attention doesn't matter as much as the attention itself. The one thing the mistress can always offer, regardless of what she looks like, is newness. She is a new body and a new face. She is an escape from that which is known. Of course one reason to get married is for familiarity -- wanting to love the same body and the same face till death do us part -- but oftentimes the routine of a relationship catches people off guard and they long for the unfamiliar. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying it happens. While it's true, mistresses like Angelina Jolie do come along -- she's the exception rather than the rule. Let's examine the evidence:

Camilla Parker-Bowles (Princess Diana) -- These days we know that Charles loved Camilla all along and never should have married Diana, but he was bound by duty to do so. At the time, all we knew was Charles was married to a striking, stylish 20-something, and he was having an affair with a plain, older woman who Diana nicknamed "The Rottweiler." Camilla is a good reminder that there's a lot more to being in love than the way someone looks, but it's unfortunate that Diana had to go through the humiliating ordeal. The monarchy has done right by letting Will chose his own wife and not insisting she be of royal descent.

Jane Doe (Halle Berry) -- Halle Berry's second husband, Eric Benét, was said to have cheated on her multiple times with multiple women. I don't know who he was being unfaithful with, but I'm going to go out on a limb and assume those women were less attractive than Halle.

Michelle "Bombshell" McGee (Sandra Bullock) -- Unless you have a penchant for tattoos, you probably consider Sandra Bullock easier on the eyes than her husband's mistress Michelle McGee. Last year Jesse James spoke to Piers Morgan about his affair. At one point during the interview (clip here), he inarticulately summed up the destructive relationship between man and ego. He said, "Turning to like infidelity or something to stroke my ego or whatever it was, you know, I don't think it was a decision I made 100 percent willingly or vindictively or anything like that ... It made me feel worse than before it happened." If a man has control over his ego and is able to tell it to simmer down when necessary, then he can be faithful to his family. If the ego has more control than the man, he is capable of betraying just about anyone -- including himself.

Rachel Uchitel, Jaimee Grubbs and Countless Others (Elin Nordegren) - Speaking of out-of-control egos, the Tiger Woods scandal is still one of the most shocking. The boy next store was sleeping with a slew of women less attractive than his Swedish wife Elin Nordegren. This situation emphasizes how sad sex addiction really is. There's nothing glamorous about it. As an addict you will have sex with anyone, anywhere, and having sex becomes the equivalent of smoking a cigarette or throwing back a shot.

Marie-Anne Thiebaud (Shania Twain) -- I really thought the marriage between producer Mutt Lange and singer Shania Twain was a keeper, but I guess marriage is difficult for anyone -- even those who start out with the most genuine intentions. After 14 years together, Shania found out not only was her husband cheating but that he was doing so with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiebaud -- two knives in one back. As one of the best selling and best looking female artists of all time, Shania probably thought she had nothing to worry about.

The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is surely breathtaking to anyone seeing it for the first or even the tenth time, but not necessarily to the security guard who's worked there for twenty years. He can probably point out the most minor flaws. As it true with people -- a gorgeous woman is only flawless to those of us who don't see her on a daily basis, which is why it's best to make sure there's more to the relationship than just the exterior. I guess the bad news is women have to be suspicious of everyone -- not just the pretty girls. The good news is if you trust your man and are secure within yourself, you don't have to be suspicious at all.

13 Country Artists With Bad Luck: Shania Twain

By: Billy Dukes

Country music’s most commercially successful female artist has been snake-bitten in recent years. Shania Twain‘s husband Mutt Lange cheated on her with a good friend, and just as she seemed on the verge of recovering from that personal tragedy, she slipped and fell at the CMT Music Awards in June 2010. OK, those two things are not nearly comparable, but the infidelity isn’t the only case of Twain proving she can overcome any obstacle put in her way. Before she even left Ontario to move to Nashville, her mother and step-father were killed in a car accident. Faced with taking care of her siblings, she had to put off her dream of country stardom, but not for long.

Before they had a stylist: Stars go from frumpy to fabulous

SHANIA TWAIN: Shania Twain has a big voice - but an even bigger fashion sense. The country songstress has always favored dramatic looks ... dramatic is a nice way to describe them, right? Thank goodness these days Twain has simplified her style and let her stunning natural beauty take center stage.

What Does LSU Need To Turn The Basketball Season Around?

Pic courtesy of sbnation.com

There’s a song by Shania Twain: “Dance With The One That Brought You”, and a book by Molly Ivans: “You Got to Dance with Them What Brung You”. They both boil down to the same thing. Recruitment’s over for now, and we have to do our best with what we have to work with.

We won’t waste time quoting stats on last year, we know how bad it was, and the LSU program needs to make improvents, and do it sooner rather than later. The LSU kids showed some heart in the Bulldogs loss, and even the loss itself was in doubt near the end of the game.

Yes, the LSU Tigers were outclassed in the game; the Bulldogs have some big, well coached players with a bit more experience. Buzz made some good points, and one of them tells the whole tale, the free throw shooting. Look at the score, it was a close game: 76-71, that’s only a 5 point difference. Fouls and free throws were the deciding factor in this one.

The burden is on the coaches as much as it is on the boys, there’s lots of work to do. LSU shot 61% at the foul line, and that’s not good enough for the SEC. Mississippi State shot 74%, which was a lot closer to the SEC standard. The problem was that the Bulldogs got to shoot way the hell too many of them, and you can’t win like that.

The coaches need to figure that one out, and get it fixed. There’s times to foul, but it needs to be a calculated decision. The boys need to spend some long hours at the free throw line as well. I watched one of our best shooters miss two in a row at a very critical point of the game.

I felt like that was a turning point, it may well have been one. We may be 2 and 4, but it’s still early and some hard work can turn this around.

Keyboardist John Hobbs to Be Honored as Newest Nashville Cat

Country Music Hall of Fame and MuseumNashville, TN -- Acclaimed keyboardist John Hobbs will take a seat on Saturday, March 10, as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum's popular series Nashville Cats: A Celebration of Music City Musicians. The program, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Museum's Ford Theater, is included with museum admission and is free to museum members. The program will also be streamed live at www.countrymusichalloffame.org

Hosted by Bill Lloyd, the tribute to Hobbs will include a brief performance and an in-depth, one-on-one interview illustrated with vintage recordings, photos and film clips from the museum's Frist Library and Archive. Immediately following the program, Hobbs will sign autographs in the Museum Store.

A first-call session keyboardist for over three decades, John Hobbs has contributed to modern country classics such as Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England," George Strait's "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" and Shania Twain's "You're Still the One." His credits also include work with pop stars Michael Bolton, Toni Braxton, David Cassidy and Olivia Newton-John. One of the most respected keyboard players in country music, Hobbs remains one of Nashville's elite session musicians, contributing to contemporary recordings by Brooks & Dunn, Deana Carter, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Kenny Rogers and many others.

John Hobbs was born in Long Beach, California, in 1950. He started playing the trombone when he was eight and learned other brass and woodwind instruments before transitioning to the piano when he was 15. During his college days at California State University in Long Beach, Hobbs met Larry Carlton. Carlton introduced him to Kenny Rogers; and in 1969, Hobbs quit college and joined Rogers' band, the First Edition.

In the 1970s, Hobbs began making a name for himself in the L.A. music scene. He scored TV shows and films and played on records for George Jones, Tom Jones, Barry Manilow, Olivia Newton- John, Charlie Rich, Lionel Richie and many other pop and country artists.

Hobbs began commuting to Nashville in 1984 and made the permanent move a decade later. His 1980s and '90s Nashville credits include Deana Carter's "Strawberry Wine," Patty Loveless' "I Try to Think About Elvis," Reba McEntire's "Whoever's in New England," George Strait's "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" and recordings for Kenny Chesney, Martina McBride, Shania Twain, Clay Walker, Trisha Yearwood and more. Hobbs also served as musical director for the Academy of Country Music Awards from 1984 to 1995.

In 2000, Hobbs began his ongoing tenure as Vince Gill's bandleader and continued to be a first-call keyboardist for Nashville recording sessions in the new millennium. He has recorded with Trace Adkins, Brooks & Dunn, Keb' Mo', Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Chris Young and numerous other artists.

In addition to playing keyboards for Nashville's biggest stars, Hobbs is also a talented songwriter and producer. He has written songs recorded by Ray Charles, Diamond Rio, Gill, Collin Raye, McEntire and Pam Tillis. His production credits include seven records for Raye; Gill's These Days, for which Hobbs won a 2007 Grammy; and LeAnn Rimes' critically acclaimed album Lady & Gentlemen.

In 2002, Hobbs joined fellow A-list musicians Eddie Bayers, Brent Mason, Paul Franklin and Michael Rhodes to form the Players. The group released a live DVD and toured Japan. Hobbs also joined the Notorious Cherry Bombs for the band's reunion appearances and subsequent album. Along with Hobbs, the band included Bayers, Richard Bennett, Tony Brown, Rodney Crowell, Hank DeVito, Gill and Rhodes.

Hobbs has earned the Academy of Country Music's Keyboard Player of the Year Award 10 times. He is the leader of the Medallion All-Star band, the band that provides accompaniment for the induction ceremony of new members to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and is a member of the backing band for Keith Urban's We're All for the Hall fundraising concerts.

Hobbs continues to book session work and performs regularly with the Players.

The Nashville Cats series is made possible, in part, by grants from the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission and by an agreement between the Tennessee Arts Commission and National Endowment for the Arts.

STAR SURVEILLANCE

Country superstar Shania Twain and actor Chazz Palminteri were at Cirque du Soleil’s the Beatles Love at the Mirage in separate groups. Chazz, who brings his one-man show “A Bronx Tale” to the Terry Fator Theater at the Mirage from March 12-20, enjoyed dinner afterward at “Iron Chef” winner Kerry Simon’s restaurant Simon in Palms Place. Also at Simon: Big Hoss enjoying a 35-day, dry-aged ribeye and Death by Potato with Makers Mark and Sprite. Flamingo headliner Marie Osmond, Magic Johnson and hair king John Paul DeJoria attended the 27th annual Caper hair convention in Caesars Palace, entertaining 2,500 future hair professionals with Robert Cromeans, global artistic director, and “Salon Takeover” host Tabatha Coffey. I read Mayor Carolyn Goodman’s proclamation of Paul Mitchell Day in her absence. I couldn’t resist running this photo of Neil Patrick Harris with the Gazillionaire and Penny Pibbets at “Absinthe” that we reported Monday. The “How I Met Your Mother” star tweeted, “@AbsintheVegas. Wonderful show, acts are fantastic. Most importantly a must-see!”

Cady Groves & Hot Chelle Rae On Shania Twain, Karoake And Beach Balls: Favorites

By Robbie Daw

“This Little Girl” songstress Cady Groves is about to wrap up her North American trek with “Tonight, Tonight” pop-rockers Hot Chelle Rae, and while they were on the road together we thought it would be great fun to sit them all down and prod them on what some of their favorite things are. Little did we know we’d be hearing about the Shania Twain back catalog, offbeat pronunciations of “salmon” and “filet mignon” and — yikes! — Cady’s first sexual experience via a beach ball at a Styx concert. (No, we’re not kidding.) Watch our exclusive video from when this meeting of the pop minds happened below.

During their sitdown, Cady and the guys from Hot Chelle Rae elaborated on their favorite foods and favorite songs to cover (both in concert and at karoake), and they slightly disagreed on the cheesiness of NSYNC’s 2000 hit “Bye Bye Bye”.

And then there was the moment Cady hit us with this bit of info, while discussing the first concert she ever went to: “Styx! And I fell in love with [guitarist] Tommy Shaw. Oh my gosh! I fell so hard for him.” We’ll just let her do the talking in the video below about the beach ball incident.

Tommy Hunter still going strong

By Bill Harris, QMI Agency

Posted:Monday, March 05, 2012 01:58 PM EST

1330677085707_ORIGINAL.jpg?quality=80&size=650x

If you’re old enough to remember The Tommy Hunter Show, you’ll remember what a big deal it was on Canadian TV.

Not only did it highlight the singing and playing of its talented host, but virtually all the biggest and budding country music acts of the era performed on The Tommy Hunter Show.

“Yeah, Shania Twain,” said Hunter, asked to recall young performers on his show who he could tell were headed for greatness.

“Anne Murray, when she was first starting. Garth Brooks did our show. Alan Jackson. Reba McEntire.”

The Tommy Hunter Show aired on CBC from 1965 to 1992, if you can believe it. Hunter has kept active touring since then, but now, finally, “Canada’s Country Gentleman” is retiring.

Having just completed the East Coast leg of his final tour, Hunter has only a handful of concerts remaining in his native Ontario over the next couple of weeks, including a show at Casino Rama, north of Toronto, on March 15 (visit www.tommyhunter.com for a full list). Things culminate with a concert in Hunter’s home town of London, Ont., on March 20, which just happens to be his 75th birthday.

“I know I still can sing and perform, but what you do at 25 you can’t do when you’re 75,” Hunter said. “You have to face facts and reality.

“Tony Bennett (age 85) is probably one of the rare exceptions who still is doing it. But I rather would have people come to one of my final shows and say, ‘Why is he retiring?’ I want people to leave happy, saying, ‘Boy, that brings back a lot of memories.’ ”

Notably, it’s the memories of other people’s TV memories that have kept Hunter energized as a performer over the past two decades.

“What I hear continuously is that the kids would rush upstairs after doing the dishes, and the old man would throw some logs on the fire to keep the place warm, and the kids would have a bath and put on fresh pyjamas, and run down and jump up on the sofa, and they were told, ‘Be quiet, now, because Tommy’s coming on and we want to watch the show,’ ” Hunter said.

“But this is what I would refer to as the backhanded compliment. People will say, ‘We watched your show every week.’ And then there’s a long pause, and they add, ‘Now that I think about it, we had only one channel back then.’

“It’s a great line, and they don’t even realize what they’re saying. But in all seriousness, it’s a tremendous feeling listening to those stories.”

In terms of TV legacy, given that there now are separate country music networks that do very well, Hunter is proud that his show helped bring country music out of the barn, so to speak.

“With country music on TV back then, the first thing they’d say is, ‘We don’t know anything about country music, we have this pimply faced 19-year-old kid playing a guitar, let’s just build a barn set and throw in some bales of hay,’ ” Hunter said. “But that’s the last thing I wanted.

“Over time we acquired the best producers, directors and writers, a great team. When I introduced Johnny Cash, I wanted him to come right into your living rooms all across Canada, and you weren’t seeing cattle moving in the background and pitchforks and all that stuff. Because I thought our music had progressed to a level.”

The music, in other words, was good enough to stand on its own.

“Yes,” Hunter said. “That’s exactly right. “I think our show really made a change in that way.

Remember When Steve Earle Compared Shania Twain to a Stripper?

Steve Earle, Shania Twain

This is perhaps the most infamous country music quote of all time. Defender of classic country Steve Earle didn’t care for the new Nashville sound that was up-and-coming in the ’90s. He called Garth Brooks “the Anti-Hank” and then said Shania Twain was “the highest paid lap-dancer in Nashville.” In 2001, Country Weekly reported that Earle had a poster of Twain outside his office door. The word “talent” was handwritten on the poster, with an arrow pointing at her belly button.

Unlike rock or pop music artists, country artists normally keep their opinions to themselves. The “if you can’t say anything nice…” policy keeps most people in line. While it’d be great to assume that Nashville artists are even sweeter than Bobby Pinson’s Dump Cake, the reality is there have been many examples of a sharp-tongued singer suddenly disappearing from the radio charts. Exhibit No. 1: Natalie Maines and the Dixie Chicks.

Kelly Clarkson Covers Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One” In Ontario

By X. Alexander on Mon Mar 19 2012

clarkson

Kelly Clarkson does it again! The “Dark Side” diva has covered everyone from Madonna to Paramore, yet it somehow escaped our attention that she also slipped a Shania Twain tribute into her Windsor, Ontario concert earlier this month — at least until this little clip started floating around. “That Woman In Me album, that first one I got of hers, was so awesome,” Kelly says of the Canadian country crossover star before launching into the fan request of “You’re Still The One.” Watch it below.

Did Kelly do Shania justice? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter or in the comments.
