On today's CMT Hot 20 Countdown, they were talking about Toby Keith's 20th anniversary in country music and they showed a small clip of Shania and Toby from 1993. Shania was talking about what a big star Toby was and how he was the first one of them to be recognized and asked for an autograph.

I haven't heard anything about Shania attending but if there was a seat for her I'm sure she was there. Here is an article about the Tim McGraw special which was taped on April 8 at the MGM Grand Arena. It will air May 19 on CBS.

Preview: Tim McGraw’s ‘Superstar Summer Night’ tonight at MGM Grand

By Robin Leach | Posted April 8, 2013 • 11:28 a.m.

For the second time in 24 hours, the joint will be jumping at MGM Grand Garden Arena with another monster lineup of music giants. Our The Venetian residency headliners country king Tim McGraw and his wife, country queen Faith Hill, have recruited an all-star lineup for the taping of his “Superstar Summer Night” that airs as a 2-hour CBS special on Sunday, May 19.

It’s an eclectic musical group when you consider Tim has added pop, rock and rap stars, including a rare appearance by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame who has sold more than 100 million records during a career that’s spanned more than 40 years.

Call him a guitarist and songwriter of blues to country, but his “Blue Moon Swamp” in 1997 won his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005, which followed his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. He’s still going strong with his ninth solo album, “A Song for Everyone,” out May 28.

There’s a collaboration that sums it up best, with Nelly and hot ACM New Artist of the Year winner Florida Georgia Line (Tyler Hubbard from Monroe, Ga., and Brian Kelley from Ormond Beach, Fla.) -- and picture Pitbull and Ne-Yo alongside Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum.

Newly crowned Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan hardly has time to savor Sunday night’s achievements at the 2013 ACM Awards -- he served as a first-time co-host alongside Blake Shelton, also won for Vocal Event of the Year and wore really tight jeans, per Shelton -- before he’s back to singing for his supper on Tim’s tribute. Other artists include Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, The Band Perry and Dierks Bentley.

Tim, a 15-time ACM Awards winner, is using the TV special to kick off the 2013 touring season and raise funds and awareness for ACM’s charity Lifting Lives. Faith is a 15-time ACM Awards winner, as well.

The taping starts at 7:30 p.m. today for the May 19 special on CBS.

Throwback Thursday: Shania Twain

May 9, 2013

Shania Twain was one of the biggest singing stars of the 1990's. Her 1997 album Come On Over was the best-selling studio album of all time by a female and the best-selling country album of all time. She won five Grammy Awards and is is the only female artist in history to have three consecutive albums reach diamond status. So why hasn't she put out an album since 2002? Well, she's been dealing with many of the personal issues she discussed in her book From This Moment On. The good news is that she has been performing a live show in Las Vegas at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace called "Shania: Still the One" since December of 2012, running through June 1, 2013, so hopefully a new album will finally be forthcoming.

Country Stars Share Their Mother’s Day Stories

By Sterling Whitaker May 12, 2013 11:16 AM

It’s Mother’s Day, and nothing is more important to country music than honoring your mother. Here, some of country’s biggest stars share their favorite stories about their mothers, the mothers of their children, or even their own motherhood.

Alan Jackson says his wife, Denise, set a positive example for their daughters when she wrote the best-selling book ‘It’s All About Him’ a few years ago. “I think it’s been great for them to see her do something out there that’s, again, not typical for a parent at all,” he shares. “But she’s a great role model for them anyway and always has been, whether she did anything professionally or not. I could see it in their eyes, you know, that they were surprised — very surprised, and also, I could see them with interest looking at her thinking it was special for her to do that.”

‘Wagon Wheel’ singer Darius Rucker says his character comes from wanting to please his mother. “I think that’s the main reason I am how I am…an innate fear of disappointing my mom,” he admits. “My mom’s not even alive, and I have a fear of her looking down from heaven and going, ‘Man I’m just disappointed in my son.’ She could have said anything in the world to me, but if she would have said, ‘Son, you just disappointed me,’ that would have killed me.”

Dierks Bentley says keeping his wife happy on Mother’s Day is a big priority. “Any touring husband, anyone who tours who has kids and a wife back home, it’s tough, man. It’s a lot of work,” he acknowledges. “So, I definitely need to step up to think of something great to do this Sunday, for sure. But nothing yet. As usual, I’ll probably get something last minute and hopefully, it’ll be great, though. She deserves something great.”

He may seem like an outlaw from his scruffy image, but Eric Church loves his mama. He has talked before about how much of his musical ability he owes to his mother — but he apparently feels he owes her an apology for his behavior when he was younger, too, though he doesn’t want to say just why. “If I’ve gotten away with it this long I’m not about  . . . I’m not letting it out now [that] I’ve made it. The guilt is even gone now, I’m good,” he says with a laugh. “So probably, but I’m not going to admit any of it. I’ll say I’m sorry, just blanket I’m sorry.”

Singer Charles Kelley from Lady Antebellum says he and his brother, pop singer Josh Kelley, also owe their mom for putting up with their youthful shenanigans. “We used to play our music loud up above on the second floor, bang on the drums and the guitar,” he recalls. “And my mom’s just one of those people, she’ll do anything for her family and she sacrificed a lot for us boys. Anytime we needed something, she made it happen. And so, we owe her a lot. She’s definitely the reason we’re playing music.”

Of course, Mother’s Day is also about being a parent. Little Big Town singer Kimberly Schlapman waited a long time for motherhood, and she says being a mom ties her to her own mother. “I see what my mother gave up and her sacrifices and her love and how she made us the most important thing in her life, and that’s what I strive to do for my little girl,” she says. “It’s the most important job I have, and it’s the most responsibility that I have, and I try to live up to a great example that I had for my mother.”

Shania Twain stresses the importance of expressing love. “It’s such a joy to be a parent,” she says. “So, I relate to all the mums out there who are getting all their love and appreciation from their kids, and I hope, when you’re a kid, a child of somebody, show your mum you love her, because it means everything.”

Ball State alum fiddling for Shania Twain

by Keiara Carr | The Journal Gazette | May 19, 2013

bilde?Site=JG&Date=20130519&Category=ENT02&ArtNo=305199998&Ref=AR&Q=85&MaxW=400&MaxH=600
Violinist Jason Mowery, a former Fort Wayne resident, performs nightly shows in Las Vegas.

How did violinist Jason Mowery go from fiddling in small town shows in Indiana to performing nightly in Las Vegas with Shania Twain, one of the top-selling female country artists of all time?

Well, he had to pull a few strings.

Before the former Fort Wayne resident performed for thousands in 18 countries on five continents, before playing the Grand Ole Opry, and even before the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, Mowery was working on graduating with a music engineering technology degree from Ball State University in 2000 with a passion for live performance and no idea of what to do next – except email anybody in the country music industry within a 20-mile radius of Nashville.

“I got really lucky,” Mowery says by phone from his home in Nashville. “I was working in the computer lab at Ball State and had some down time so I taught myself how to design a website probably a year and half before graduation. I started sending out my website like a business card.”

From one fateful email, Mowery, 36, has established himself as a touring country musician for 13 years. He is currently performing with Shania Twain during her Caesar’s Palace residency.

“I still live in Nashville, but we go out to Las Vegas about four times a year and we’re there for about three weeks,” he says. “We play shows almost every day.”

In April, Mowery was awarded Ball State’s prestigious Outstanding Alumni Award for his long list of accomplishments.

Mowery says that it wasn’t until he had to write his biography for the award program that he took the time to reflect on where his career has taken him.

“It really caught me by surprise. I didn’t think about what I do as major accomplishments,” he says. “You just lose track of everything you’ve been doing. It just made me really proud to step back and look at what I’ve done from the outside looking in.”

By some divine force – or forwarding by a co-worker – Mowery’s career began straight out of college when a mass email landed in the inbox of a manager looking for a temporary fiddler to play in the band of a new country singer, Keith Urban. Mowery says the band’s original fiddler had decided to take a New Zealand vacation.

“I was brought in to audition and to rehearse, and I instantly moved to Nashville,” Mowery says. “When that girl came back from New Zealand, I had kind of stolen her job. It turned into touring for four and a half years.”

Mowery first began playing the fiddle at the age of 9, growing up surrounded by his grandmother, great-aunts and great-uncles who played in the Decatur-based Geels Bluegrass Band. The band is a well-known fixture on Indiana’s bluegrass circuit. Mowery said he picked up fiddling from his great-uncle, Master Fiddler Francis Geels. Born in 1925, Geels performed on the same fiddle for most of his adult life. Before he died in 2011, Geels made a home recording of more than 100 songs just in case he ever forgot how to play them. The recordings now serve as an archive for bluegrass musicians.

“I sort of idolized him,” Mowery says. “I always wanted to do what he was doing.”

By the age of 11, Mowery was performing as a fiddler in the band. As a teenager at North Side High School, Mowery competed in fiddling competitions, winning several state fiddling championships and placing as a top 10 finalist in the Grand Masters National Fiddling Championship. However, as a high school senior, Mowery decided to go to Ball State to pursue architecture.

“I had drafting classes when I was at North Side, and they were college-level courses. It was really cool, and Ball State had a really great program,” he says.

Over the one year that he studied architecture, Mowery continued to play fiddle in a number of bands for extra money. He realized that he wanted to pursue music professionally; he transferred to the college’s School of Music the next year.

Mowery began to study recording technology, sound synthesis, composition, computer music and performance.

“There are all sorts of different jobs in the music business, but the one that is the most unstable is live performance, which is what I do as a touring musician,” he says. “You might be really busy for a while and then nothing. You have to be good at planning and managing your money.”

Over the years, Mowery has expanded his repertoire to include classic violin, mandolin, lap steel, banjo, guitar and Dobro, a resonator guitar. He says that working with artists in other genres, like Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee John Fogerty, gives him a chance to grow as a musician. He says that he would like to work with bluegrass-country singer Alison Krauss and rock guitarist Derek Trucks.

“I want to play with AC/DC, but I don’t think they’re going to hire a fiddle player anytime soon,” Mowery says.

Since working as a touring musician isn’t usually a long-lived career, Mowery has begun to think of other ways he can stay involved in music. He has already written songs with some of Nashville’s most prominent songwriters for Canadian Idol Jaydee Bixby and Jessica Harp, one-half of former country duo The Wreckers. Mowery married Harp in 2008. The couple has one daughter, Stella.

He says that once he gets older, he would like to stay in Nashville with his family and become a songwriter full-time.

“It’s physically hard to be a touring musician. There’s only so much sleeping on planes and buses a person can take,” Mowery says. “With already having two back surgeries, retirement might come a little quicker for me.”

Whatever the future, he knows that his place will always be behind the music.

“I love being the side guy. I never wanted to be the guy standing in the center,” Mowery says. “I’ve always loved being in the context of a band.”

Shania Twain – Strange Tour Rider Requests

By Billy Dukes

A Shania Twain tour stop is an economic boom for local produce farmers. While on the road, the singer hopes for a small truckload of lemons, papayas, mangoes, bananas, melons, beets, broccoli and carrots — 10 pounds of carrots! The vegetarian points out that she often eats with her crew and has special demands. You think? On stage, she likes to know she’s safe, so a K9 sweep of the area may be requested to deter people from making fake bomb threats. Additionally, Twain has her own security dog.

There is a new special on the E! Channel called Hollywood Goes Country and they showed a very brief (probably only 30 second) clip of a Shania interview from 1995.

Sexy Album Covers: Country Music’s Hottest CD Cover Art

By Gayle Thompson

You can’t judge an album by its cover, but you can certainly ogle it. It’s hard to find a country music CD without a photo of its featured artist looking his or her hottest. From Carrie Underwood‘s leg-tacular new ‘Blown Away’ album cover to the two pots of gold underneath Dolly Parton‘s ‘Rainbow,’ country singers have long made their album covers sizzle with sex appeal. The Boot presents our picks for the sexiest album covers in country music.

stupbig.JPG

2. Shania Twain, ‘Up!’

Shania’s 2002 double-disc, ‘Up!,’ features the Canadian beauty in a sheer white tank top that leaves little to the imagination. A triple-platinum seller, the album boasts a No. 1 hit, ‘I’m Gonna Getcha Good,’ plus several Top 10 tunes, including ‘Forever and For Always’ and ‘It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing.’

***"I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" which was the album's lead single never hit No. 1, it peaked at No. 7. While "Forever And For Always" peaked at No. 4.

Somebody on the Cleveland Indians baseball team is a big Shania fan!

Jake Taylor, Shania Twain Among Pseudonyms Used by Cleveland Indians as Team’s Hotel List Gets Leaked (Photo)

by Anna Fogel on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 5:15PM

What do Denzel Washington, Shania Twain and Carmen Electra have in common? Just ask the Cleveland Indians.

While in Minnesota for a three-game series against the Twins this weekend, the Tribe’s rooming list was accidentally put into the hands of a regular guest, and before too long, all of the creative pseudonyms that the players use on the road were made public information.

Jake Taylor, catcher for the Indians in Major League makes an appearance on the hotel list, along with Jennifer Lopez, Dick Tracy and even Tar Zann leaves the jungle to travel with the team.

Not all of the Indians on the 40-man roster use fake names, but some of the most famous ones do such as Nick Swisher, Michael Bourn, Mark Reynolds, Jason Giambi, Justin Masterson and Carlos Santana – which means it’s anyone’s guess as to which star likes to go by J.Lo on the road.

Check out the full rooming list below.

FN Spy: Styling Cher Lloyd

By Lauren Manzino | August 12, 2013

What do Pink, Shania Twain and up-and-comer Cher Lloyd have in common? They have all worked with celebrity stylist and costume designer Jordan Stolch, who fueled her passion for fashion at a young age. “When I was younger I would wear my mother’s old dresses and jewelry around the house. As I got older I would buy fashion magazines and study them,” Stolch told Spy. “I started my Vogue collection around this time and haven’t missed an issue since.” Now, Stolch is wrapping up her recent style credits, including Pink’s “The Truth About Love” tour and Shania Twain’s “Still the One” series. This fall, she will join Cher Lloyd’s “I Wish” tour. Here, Stolch talks style among celebs and brands fit for dancing feet.

What are some of the standout looks for Lloyd’s upcoming tour?
“I am working with a lot of up-and-coming designers on this project because I love collaborating with new talent. For this tour, fans can expect to see a ‘new’ Cher. We are stepping up the style ante with more grown-up looks and fashion-forward pieces. You will see Cher taking it back to her more urban days with one-of-a-kind streetwear pieces and amazing footwear.”

What are some of Lloyd’s favorite footwear brands and styles?
“Because Cher spends so much time on stage, she loves footwear that is fashion-forward but still provides her the security to move. We have a few great-heeled combat boots that we’ve been using lately. Cher loves super-high heels, but doesn’t get the opportunity to wear them as much. These are great for photo shoots or appearances. Brands she adores are Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, Jeffrey Campbell and Sam Edelman.”

You’ve done wardrobe for Pink and Shania Twain, who have dramatically different looks. How would you describe their on-stage style?
“The style direction for Pink’s tour was very street oriented and uninhibited. There was a lot of bold color and print use, paired with unexpected silhouettes. For Shania’s tour, the direction was much more classic and feminine and played to her very sophisticated nature.”

Can You Guess the Artist in This Yearbook Photo?

By Billy Dukes | August 22, 2013

This future country star had to bundle up to stay warm on her part of the planet. That thick sweater (or one like it) was likely a staple of her winter wardrobe. Later, she’d go on to push the boundaries of country fashion with outfits that were very revealing. Do you think you know who this singer is?

This pic was likely taken in the mid ’70s, although the style and the colors have a mid ’80s feel. It’d be another 15 years before the world would learn her name. These days, she’s returned to the spotlight, but hasn’t toured in over a decade. Click the button below to find out if your guess is right and to see more country yearbook photos.

I think little Eileen looks cute in this picture. I like the smile and the dimple on her cheek and I can see intellect and seriousness in her eyes, which are also beautiful, so transparent and green.

Shania Twain: 20 years of bad feelings, bare midriffs and breaking ground

posted by Andrea Warner on Sep 20, 2013

blog-Shania20Years_16x9_620x350.jpg

It’s been 20 years since Shania Twain's self-titled debut was released, and over a decade since her last full-length studio release. In the space of just nine years, from 1993 to 2003, Twain hit the country music industry like a grenade, blowing it up from the inside out. She made women-centric pop crossovers a modern country staple (you’re welcome, Dixie Chicks, Taylor Swift) and her third album, Come On Over, is one of the biggest and best-selling country albums of all time.

But for me at least, her legacy is a complicated one. As a teenager, I couldn’t stand Twain. I felt her brand of coy, sexy country-pop pushed women back 10 or 15 years. I wrote her off as a construct of male fantasy: a girl who could ride a horse while showing off an impossibly toned bare midriff by day and slip into some sort of cleavage-baring c0cktail dress at night, the emphasis always on her sex appeal first, relatability second, talent third.

In retrospect, I think my frustrations were warranted, but it was terribly un-feminist of me to ignore the ground she was breaking. I only saw what I felt were the shattered pieces of progress sacrificed by virtue of her success. I saw her success as reaffirming and congratulating patriarchy on making women conform to a specific set of ideals, of being rewarded for going along with the charade that one needs to be perceived as at least twice as sexy as they are talented in order to make it.

I couldn’t see Twain’s success as having value to all women, but it did and it does. I didn’t see her skillful manipulation of the surface to push her subversive, secret agenda — an agenda that would change country music, for a little while at least, and give rise to a new generation of women writing and producing their own material. On all of her albums, Twain asserted what she wanted as a woman, or at least what her female characters wanted, and not in service of the male gaze but in service of herself. Not that I can personally get behind every lyric, but from “Any Man of Mine” to “That Don’t Impress Me Much” to “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face,” Twain reiterated over and over again a woman’s power and independence. A number of her songs that didn’t chart reinforced feminist themes, such as "If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!."

It’s particularly striking given the current prevalence of bro-country (Florida Georgia Line, Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan) that’s taken over the airwaves, stadiums and even the recent CCMA Awards. Taylor Swift has moved entirely into pop at this point, leaving Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert as modern country’s two main solo female artists. Earlier this summer, Twain announced via Facebook that she’s finally working on her fifth studio release. It’s a comeback I never dreamed I wanted, but now I think it can’t come soon enough.

To celebrate Twain's 20 years in the music industry, I've put together the gallery above (Link Below) of some of her biggest moments, career highlights and surprising stories about the life and times of Shania Twain.

Hi,

Sounds like someone who didn't get Shania at first and then grew up and realized what Shania is all about...being independent as a woman of today and breaking down barriers and setting new precedents in life and music.  I think Ms. Warner needed to mature a little herself before she realized the true meaning of Shania.  But now it seems she has seen the light and knows who busted through the doors for other female artists like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert.  Shania made the road a whole lot easier for them then it would have been without her.  Shania is like the female Elvis of country if you want to see it that way.  Elvis had the black blues type music and the hips and "vulgar" dance moves and Shania had her feminist lyrics and her always smiling belly button and sexy dance videos.

Just my thoughts

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

As a teenager, I couldn’t stand Twain. I felt her brand of coy, sexy country-pop pushed women back 10 or 15 years. I wrote her off as a construct of male fantasy: a girl who could ride a horse while showing off an impossibly toned bare midriff by day and slip into some sort of cleavage-baring c0cktail dress at night, the emphasis always on her sex appeal first, relatability second, talent third.

In retrospect, I think my frustrations were warranted

Translation: "Hi, Look at me! I'm a bitter, insecure feminist* that doesn't live in the real world whatsoever! Look at me!"

Funny how she writes an article supposedly about Shania when it's actually an article about herself.

*edit: more like feminazi

Odd that some people are "mad" at the article. She is complimenting Shania. She took another look at what Shania accomplished. She is saying that Shania opened doors for women in music. Was ahead of her time. Yes, that sound so "jealous". She does not have to adore every single outfit, look or song of Shania's--she is not some mindless hero worshiper who thinks that Shania is her God. *gag*.

I see some have issues with reading comprehension and reading the ENTIRE article before posting comments.....but then again, these "new" members sure sound like OLD (emphasis on old) members....so strange......

And yes, every women is a feminazi when they don't appreciate when fellow women use their bodies to sell themselves instead of their talent......

Strange. If you don't like the way Shania has used her physical attractiveness to advance her career in the entertainment industry, maybe you need to take a long, hard look in the mirror, and ask yourself this question: "What the hell am I doing on a Shania Twain fan site?"

Strange. If you think that a fan of an artist has to like EVERY single thing they have done and praise them like they are a god then perhaps you should take a long, hard look in the mirror, and ask yourself this question, "Why the hell do I think that is normal and correct to assume that one must worship everything about an artist before they can call themselves a fan and visit fan sites? And the only way to be a fan is to show 100% blind sheep like devotion and to bow down to EVERYTHING the artist says, does and wears...."

Q+A: Carrot Top celebrates eighth anniversary at Luxor and looks to the future

By Robin Leach | November 4, 2013

You expend a huge amount of frenetic energy onstage, and it looks like by the end of it, you’re about physically wiped out.

I’m a young whippersnapper, I'm ready to do another one. I work out every day in the gym. Then I run all over the stage. You do get worn out more mentally than physically. It’s only 90 minutes but you’re still exhausted. It’s a solo act, no place to hide onstage.

I have a lot of friends in bands, so I’m kind of like the lead vocal or the drummer. You can’t take a break when you’re in front. I chose it that way, though. There’s a lot of stuff in the show with the added production, so I’m starting to bring other guys onstage to do stupid bits. Shania Twain came to see my show, so I went to see hers, and now, as a tribute to her, I have a guy dressed as a horse, and I sing to him.

Cute Kids Singing Country Songs – Shania Twain, ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman’

By Billy Dukes | November 12, 2013 3:00 PM

The Castillo kids have gotten a lot of ink for their covers of pop and country songs. This take on Shania Twain‘s ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman’ is among the trio’s early recordings, released to YouTube in 2010. That’s Jessie, Joey and Julie dancing, singing and playing the music to Twain’s 1999 hit. The 65-second-long clip is one of the cutest yet.

This song hardly shows off their full talents, however. The Florida-based group sing in nine different languages, play eight instruments and have over a million views at their YouTube channel. Their version of ‘Orange Blossom Special’ is a signature tune. You may have seen them on television shows hosted by Oprah and Rachel Ray, or during a Cricket Wireless commercial. This group is no doubt planning their future as they approach their teens (Joey is 17). We suggest a move to Nashville!

Last night on "The X Factor" (USA), the night's second elimination came down to a battle between Khaya Cohen and Rachel Potter. They both sang a song to try and save themselves. Rachel sang "From This Moment On" and was voted off by a 3-1 vote from the judges.

16 Years Ago: Shania Twain Makes History With ‘The Woman in Me’

By Gayle Thompson | November 17, 2013 11:00 AM

Shania-Twain-The-Woman-in-Me.jpg

Nov. 17, 1997 was a historic day for Shania Twain, and for country music. It was on this day, 16 years ago, that the singer’s sophomore album, ‘The Woman in Me,’ was certified diamond, signifying sales of more than 10 million units.

‘The Woman in Me’ became the first record by a female artist to sell in excess of 10 million units. The album spawned six No. 1 hits, and sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Twain wrote or co-wrote every song but one on the album with her then-husband, producer Mutt Lange, who wrote the chart-topping hit, ‘You Win My Love,’ by himself.

The success of ‘The Woman in Me’ was surprising to everyone, including the songstress. Her self-titled debut project didn’t even break the Top 40, and did not include any songs written by Twain. But with ‘The Woman in Me,’ the Canadian found her musical footing, and went on to release two more studio albums, including ‘Come on Over,’ which sold more than 40 million copies, and became the best-selling album by a female artist in any genre.

Twain has sold more than 85 million albums, becoming one of the top-selling artists of all time.

1990s Country Music Making a Comeback

11/26/2013

Another '90s superstar who recently re-entered the public spotlight is Shania Twain. Like Garth Brooks before her, she chose to do so via a splashy big-budget Las Vegas show, Still the One, that is currently scheduled through 2014. She's also said she is planning a new album, which would be her first in a decade.

City's events development officer planning for big year

By Dave Stewart | Published on December 29, 2013

Major concert, visits from governor general, big sporting events on 2014 calendar

The city of Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island, Canada) is going to be party central in 2014 and the city's events development officer is dishing on some of the details.

First up, plans are in the works for a major concert at the Charlottetown Event Grounds in late August although Wayne Long isn't saying much about this big event.

The concert would serve as the grand finale for what is being called Founders' Week, one of dozens of events built around celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference.

The Guardian has learned that well-known Canadian concert promoter Donald Tarlton, chairman of the Donald K. Donald Group of Companies, has been awarded the contract to bring in some big names.

Tarlton is working with the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), an American worldwide sporting and music entertainment company, to supply the Charlottetown show with entertainment.

Names like Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Arcade Fire and Bryan Adams have been floated as possible headliners but no artist has been signed. An announcement could come by early February.

As for the concert, Long, who also sits on the P.E.I. 2014 Inc. board, would only say there is lots of talk about it.

"There's lots of rumour about potential musical or cultural events,'' Long says. "Details will arise out of those (rumours) in the near future.''

Long had much more to say about other big things happening in 2014. Natal Day, a staple event in Charlottetown's calendar is taking a break and will be replaced for the coming year only with an event that centres on 1864 in Charlottetown, a celebration of culture and heritage, which will run for several days.

Long says the city has received funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage to host a number of events, one of which is Quebec Day that will feature a visit from Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume.

Governor General David Johnston plans on dropping by, along with every lieutenant-governor across Canada for a special conference in Charlottetown.

Invitations have also been extended to Prime Minister Stephen Harper as well as the Royal Family.

Long is also busy in his role as events development officer bringing other events to the capital, events that don't always grab headlines but still generate economic activity for Charlottetown.

In fact, the city spends approximately $250,000 each year on events development and hosting. Long spends much of his time each year on the road. That costs the city about $50,000. The city says that investment generates millions of economic activity by filling up hotel rooms and restaurants.

That time on the road means Charlottetown will host 500 delegates in February for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference. It also helps lure these events for the coming year  Baseball Canada and Softball Canada both hosting annual general meetings here; the under-14 Canadian Soccer Association national championships, the Canadian senior men's fastpitch championships and the CIS men's university soccer championships. That's just a glimpse at what is coming.

Charlottetown and Ville de Quebec will also be announcing a 2014 partnership in February.

One day Long might be attending a conference of professionals in the U.S. before heading to Ottawa on a plane to attend a conference involving national sporting organizations.

"One of the keys is being in the marketplace and yes, it does cost money. You can't do anything in today's world without being able to invest.''

Since Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee was first elected, one of his pillars has been attracting events to the city.

"We know that event attraction is important to a small city such as ours as event hosting supports our business community, adds to the quality of life of our residents and creates awareness of all that our city has to offer,'' Lee said.

"Our success to is due, in large part, to our investment in this area and the important role our events development officer has on constantly being out in the marketplace if we are to be noticed.''

Remember When Shania Twain Rocked the Super Bowl Halftime Show? [Watch]

By Billy Dukes | February 1, 2014 8:00 AM

It’s been over a decade since a country singer took the stage during the Super Bowl’s halftime show. Shania Twain was the last to do it, playing two songs during Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego, Calif. in 2003. Her performance, which you can watch here, holds up nicely in comparison to more modern productions.

Twain was amidst a mini-comeback, having just released her first new album in five years. She started the show with ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman!’ before playing ‘Up!,’ a track from her new album of the same name. She wore the same outfit throughout, but rocked the stage with great confidence. The crowd went nuts when she went “up” during ‘Up!’

No Doubt and Sting would follow her performance, but it was Twain’s songs that country fans appreciated the most. The next year saw Janet Jackson‘s infamous wardrobe malfunction. Twain’s outfit was just as revealing as Jackson’s, but she (thankfully) didn’t have an assist from Justin Timberlake.

Lucy Hale Talks 'Road Between' Album, Shania Twain and Her 'Gut Feeling' to Focus on Music

By Chuck Dauphin, Nashville | March 4, 2014

Though Lucy Hale first tasted fame for her role as Aria Montgomery on the ABC Family series "Pretty Little Liars," it's actually music that is her first love.

The singer-actress, and recent People's Choice winner, says that playing the waiting game to showcase her musical talent has been "a little bit of a process. I started in music, and I thought the music would happen before the acting So, I've been waiting a few years. I started the album process about two years ago. It's been a little bit of a wait, but I'm grateful that we held out to give it to people. So, there's a sense of relief right now. It's an awesome feeling."

Hale will release her debut album, "Road Between," on June 3.

Balancing her multi-faceted career does pose a challenge, but Hale says she's up for the challenge. "Up until this point, I've been focusing on the acting. Now, it's at the point where we're juggling both.  I knew what I was signing up for when I decided to do both. I knew it was going to be a lot of long hours, and I knew I was going to be tired, but I had a gut feeling that right now was the right time to do it. I wake up in the morning, and feel so lucky that I love what I do. It's going to be a lot of traveling on the weekends when we start shooting the show again and start doing things with the music. It will be an adjustment. But, I've got a lot of great people that are making sure things get done, but that I'm taking care of myself and getting rest."

Musically, she claims a pair of 1990s icons as artists that have inspired her, but country music has always been a part of her life growing up in Memphis. "My influences are the Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain. I also love Vince Gill and Dolly Parton, I would say that for me, though a lot of my music doesn't necessarily sound like Shania Twain, I remember growing up I listened to the Come On Over album. I remember how fun it was and how happy it made me feel when I listened to it. I hope that's how my first album is – it will make people want to go back and listen to it. A lot of the songs are really fun, and there's a lot of energy to it."

January was notable for Hale because of her win as "Favorite Cable TV Actress" at the People's Choice Awards. "It just goes to show you the power of social media and how supportive the people are that are watching the show," she says. "It's a fan voted award show, and it was incredible to see all these people who have my back and believe in what I'm doing. It was a very cool moment."

On board with Hale's musical career from the start is SiriusXM, which has been featuring the single. "They are incredible. I got to premiere my song first with them. What I love about them is that they give people a chance. They've definitely had my back."

She has finished recording her debut album, and can't wait for fans to hear the music. "I just want people to see a different side of me. With the music, I think they will get a clearer understanding of who I am, and will spread the word about what I'm doing."

She also can't wait to show the public that there is more to Lucy Hale than Aria. "A lot of people think that's all I have to offer – and I am so grateful for the show and everything that goes with it, but there's a lot more to me. I can't wait to get to showcase that!"

Taylor Swift Calls Nashville Home

By Gayle Thompson | March 17, 2014 10:00 AM

Taylor Swift might be from Pennsylvania, but she says Nashville will always be home.

“I decided to move to Nashville when I was about 10 years old,” she tells Time. “I was obsessed with watching biography TV shows about Faith Hill and Shania Twain, and I noticed that both of them went to Nashville to start their careers. From that point on, I began relentlessly nagging, begging, and pleading with my parents to take me on a trip there.”

The 24-year-old says her mother finally gave in, and the rest is history.

“When I was 11, my mom took my brother and me to Nashville on spring break and we drove up and down Music Row,” Swift recalls. “She would wait in the car as I scampered into record labels one by one, handing my demo CD to the receptionists. I remember thinking it was so odd and wonderful that all of these important record labels were all on one street, most of them in small buildings and old houses. I remember being charmed by how kind people were to strangers and newcomers like us. We took more and more trips to Nashville as time went by, and when at 13, I was offered a development deal by a major record label, my parents gave in and we moved from Pennsylvania.”

The songstress, who has achieved monumental success in the pop world and scored a handful of acting gigs as well, understands that Los Angeles or New York City might make more sense professionally, but she insists she has no plans to leave Music City.

“Choosing to have my management company based in Nashville just made sense because my family is there as well as my record label,” she explains. “I never think about moving home bases. It’s hard to describe why you consider a town your home base, except that when people ask me “Where’s home?”, I don’t even think before I say ‘Nashville.’”

Swift hasn’t had much time to spend in her favorite city lately. She just announced the addition of five more dates in Asia on her global Red Tour, which kicked off in early 2013. See a  list of her remaining concert dates here.

Cute Kids Singing Country Songs – Shania Twain, ‘From This Moment On’

By Christina Vinson | May 27, 2014

If this isn’t cute, we’re not sure what is. This 3-year-old is stinkin’ adorable in baggy jeans and a cowboy hat, performing his heart out in front of a massive fireplace. He takes a whack at Shania Twain‘s long-loved ballad ‘From This Moment On,’ and although he doesn’t quite hit all the notes (there’s some high ones in there!), he makes up for it with effort.

The high (and most difficult) parts are the most fun to watch. Have you ever heard a toddler sing in falsetto? It’s pretty cute, and hilarious. At the 1:30 mark, he really gets into those high notes and lets out some ear-splitting vocals that will have you laughing and pressing ‘replay.’

Did Shania Twain Kill Mark McGrath?

Written by Alison Bonaguro | June 26, 2014

Let me get this straight. Mark McGrath, lead vocalist of the '90s rock band Sugar Ray, once did a duet with Shania Twain. And now he's saying that country music is where pop stars go to die.

So you might reason, then, that McGrath is dead. Or that his career is dead. But he keeps popping up in all kinds of unlikely places. In addition to his music, McGrath has played host to all kinds of TV shows and even taken some gigs as a contestant on the reality show circuit (The Celebrity Apprentice and Celebrity Wife Swap, where he and rapper Coolio swapped wives for a week).

Whatever he's promoting now, though, meant calling into WWYZ-FM, a country radio station in Hartford, Conn., and explaining his own personal point of view on what happens when pop stars head to Nashville to get their slice of the country music pie -- like he did for three minutes with Twain in 2004.

"It seems that's where all pop stars go to die out there, man. You never know. That might be my only foray into country," he said of his "Party for Two" duet with Twain.

In the video, he plays the lone invitee to Twain's party -- the same role Billy Currington plays in the straight-up country version.

"You're talking about a beach boy from Newport Beach," said McGrath, who grew up in California. "So I think that they would see that the fraud was in if I went to Nashville."

However, McGrath acknowledges country music's current popularity.

"Country isn't like country anymore," he said. "Look at Taylor Swift, Dierks Bentley, all these guys. People still have this idea they've got hay in their mouth, and they're down at a country hayride," McGrath added. "It's a big business. It's Faith Hill. It's Tim McGraw, baby. It's America."

Shores and Steele celebrate 20 years leading Toledo Radio

Posted: Aug 07, 2014 1:28 PM EDT 13abc.com Kelly Heidbreder

Gary Shores and Harvey Steele have been on the air for decades. And they have been a team for 20 years this week, making them Toledo's longest running morning radio show.

"You can't create chemistry, its either there or it is not there. We didn't create the chemistry, it was just there," says Gary Shores.

And these two have it in spades. both played the trombone in grade school, both worked at pizza places when they were kids, both were adopted, now, they are brothers behind the mics at K-100.

Shores and Steele started on the air on August 4, 1994 and won a CMA award their first year. And they are friends on and off the air.  Harvey was deathly ill back in 1997 and needed a liver transplant, and his co-host, Gary was at his side.

"I'm just happy I am here because of my donor family, and I'm glad i'm with that guy because he doesn't smell," laughs Harvey Steele.

Gary was pushing for organ and tissue donation on the air and of course, wanted to play a joke or two on his buddy. He had country star, Shania Twain give him a personal phone call.

"It was Shania Twain and she was calling and I was telling my stories and about two minutes later I said, I'm kind of tired. I have to go," he says.

Gary says, "The only man on earth that has ever hung up on Shania Twain."

Commitment to community and a strong friendship. Could that be the key at K-100? So I asked the tough question: What keeps you two together?

Steele chuckles, "We have no other usable skills!"

Five things to expect at this year’s Canadian National Exhibition beyond gross fried foods

By Rebecca Tucker | August 13, 2014

As the 2014 CNE prepares to kick off on Saturday, the memory of the cronut burger, the disastrous salty-sweet foodstuff of 2013 that sent nearly 80 people to hospital with severe gastrointestinal upset due to its tainted maple-bacon jam, remains fresh in the minds of many. But this is a new exhibition, and with it comes a new class of confections — all of which, according to CNE general manager David Baudner, will be subject to amped-up rigorous health and safety screening procedures. Below, five things to expect at this year’s Canadian National Exhibition — in addition to good, safe, fried foods.

1. The Northern Comfort Saloon

New this year, the Northern Comfort Saloon is a makeshift country bar conveniently located beside the CNE’s onsite casino that promises line-dancing, live music and a selection of comfort foods. The Saloon is decked out with gigantic photos of New Country superstars Keith Urban and Shania Twain, and is licensed — so underage country fans are out of luck. Mr. Baudner calls the setup, presented in partnership with KS Country 97.5 FM “a great experiment” and says he’s looking forward to “a lot of country fun” — no word on whether that means he plans to mount the site’s mechanical bull.’

2. Flaming hockey sticks

L.A.-born circus artist Paz makes his CNE debut with a Great Canadian Pastime-themed performance that incorporates juggling, hammy theatrics and fire. It’s family-friendly entertainment that will provide enough winks and nods to keep parents engaged, provided you don’t mind a few wisecracks at the expense of your favourite team — at a media preview on Wednesday, Paz worried that his juggling-hockey-sticks-on-fire routine fell flat on account of heavy winds. “Not as disappointing as the real Flames,” he quipped afterward.

3. A very special air show

The annual Canadian International Air Show is a CNE mainstay, but this year’s presentation includes six First World War aircraft from the Great War Flying Museum, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Great War.

4. Mayoral CANdidates

A whopping 10,000 cans of food have gone into the construction of this year’s mayoral portraits at the CNE, presented by non-profit organization CanStruction. John Tory, Olivia Chow and Rob Ford will all have their likenesses on displayed throughout the CNE, during which time visitors can bring a can of food and place it in front of the portrait of the candidate for whom they plan to vote. All the cans of food will be donated to the Salvation Army after the Exhibition wraps.

5. A PanAm Preview

Ahead of the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, the CNE will be hosting an interactive sports zone featuring meet-and-greets with athletes, skills clinics and demonstrations, and the opportunity to take a photo with Pachi, the Games’ official mascot. The CNE’s website promises “a taste of what’s to come before 10,000 athletes from 41 countries arrive next summer” — which you can also experience by trying to find parking, lining up to buy food, losing your friends in a gigantic crowd, navigating gridlock and construction…
