Help get CMT's ultimate Shania fans on Oprah

Seven years ago students Mike Tobin and Nick Roper won the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance to meet their idol, Shania Twain. Now almost a decade later, the two super fans have a new goal - to get on Oprah and have a "Shan-i-Aha!" moment.

Tobin and Roper, who entered CMT's Ultimate Fan Access: Shania Twain contest in 2003, were the lucky winners selected in a nationwide contest. Of all the submission videos CMT received, Tobin and Roper's video was placed in the top five, put to a national vote and announced the winner.

Their prize: the ultimate Shania Twain access pass, which included round-trip flights to Vancouver, two days behind the scenes at the Pacific Coliseum, front row seats for two "Up!" World Tour concerts, and a sit down interview with the one and only Shania Twain.

Shania Twain fans since the age of fourteen, Tobin and Roper considered themselves not your typical diehard fans when they entered the contest at 22 years of age.

"We had no problem whatsoever poking fun at ourselves about it," said Tobin, now a 29 year-old Communications Manager for BMO Bank of Montreal. "I think we got a laugh or two."

But why Shania?

"To us, two teenaged guys, Shania had it all," says Tobin. "The looks, the sound, and she's Canadian! There is also something special about someone you admire so much coming from your own country. Nothing quite beats national pride!"

Twain, whose been on hiatus from the spotlight, jumped back into the swing of things this year when she appeared as a guest judge on American Idol. She's also announced a book deal where she will pen her own biography, star in a new documentary series on Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network, and is working on a new album.

"We would love the opportunity to spend time with Shania again," said Roper, now an insurance consultant in Calgary. "She's been out of the spotlight for a while and it sounds like she is ready to jump back into the public eye. [In 2003] Oprah was the only other person to interview Shania during that tour and it would be so much fun to join forces this time around."

The series, which is expected to air on the OWN Network in the Spring, got both Tobin and Roper's wheels turning.

"To promote this show and her new autobiography, odds are in our favour that Shania will appear on Oprah's talk show," said Tobin. "So we figured, why not ask Oprah to let the Ultimate Fans do the interview."

In their efforts to reunite with Twain, Tobin and Roper have posted a YouTube video begging Oprah for her help. In addition they have set up a Facebook page and Twitter page to help spread their message of obtaining a "Shan-i-Aha!" moment through the media mogul.

"Oprah's the most powerful woman in the world," said Tobin. "She makes things happen."

They sure took care of their T-shirts - mine (from '95 tour) is all faded out by now...it is the one I love best except for the one I had airbrushed .....

Superfan scores second meeting with Shania Twain

Mike Tobin will call the photo that he hopes to capture next month of his wife and his boyhood crush embracing one another.

Of course, many wives wouldn’t relish the thought of being in such a photo, but Michelle Tobin doesn’t mind, seeing as how her husband’s crush just happens to be country-pop super star Shania Twain.

Thanks to the Oprah Winfrey Show and his own fan initiatives on Twitter, Mike gets to meet his puppy love pin-up for the second time next month when Shania and Oprah fly him and a studio audience full of “ultimate fans” to Nashville. There, they’ll stay at the Gaylord Opryland Resort, attend the CMA (Country Music Association) Music Fest, and, most importantly, sit down to a private brunch hosted by Twain.

“I’d like to tell (Shania) about all the opportunities she’s given me, being her ultimate fan,” said Tobin, a communications manager at the Bank of Montreal. “And I’d like to thank her for that.”

That’s no exaggeration.

Tobin’s Shania Quest began back in 2003 when he and his best friend Nick Roper shot a video, declaring their love for Twain, for a fan contest put on by CMT Canada and Country 105 FM.

Winning the contest, the two men got to appear onstage with Twain as well as interview her for a television special called Ultimate Fan Access. The only other interview Twain gave around that time was with Winfrey.

Last year, when Twain announced that she was making a comeback which would include a new reality show (Why Not?) on the Oprah Winfrey Network, Tobin’s “wheels began turning.”

He and Roper guessed that Twain would be promoting her new series on Oprah at some point and they determined that they would be there. Thus began the campaign.

They shot another video of gushing Twain devotion, which they posted on YouTube (search Help get Ultimate Shania Fans on Oprah in 2011) and they started a Twitter account (@big_shania_fans) to garner support for the “Shan-i-Aha Moment!” of their dreams.

That won them the attention of Oprah’s staff and they were invited to be guests of the Winfrey show when Twain was interviewed last Thursday. Roper was vacationing in the Bahamas at the time so Tobin took his sister.

The show aired on Tuesday.

Sadly, on the program, another man was crowned Twain’s greatest fan. “Shania goes to a Chicago karaoke bar where she surprises the Ultimate Fan,” says Tobin. “It was funny to seen another guy singing Man! I Feel Like A Woman. But I think a lot of guys who are ultimate fans can relate.”

Happily, however, in one of the grand gestures she’s so famous for, Winfrey announced that she would be sending the whole studio audience to Nashville next month (June 9 and 10) for the brunch with Shania. “It’s one of those things where you think back to your youth and the excitement of those old crushes,” Tobin says. “My wife is going to come with me to the brunch and I’m hoping to get a photo of them hugging. I’ll caption it ‘The loves of my life’ and frame it.”

Might all this Shania love make his wife jealous?

Tobin doesn’t think so. “Shania is somebody who creates such excitement and positivity for people,” he says.

My Shania shirt from her first tour, like theirs above, has been relegated to home wear - it is literally falling apart do to constant wear.

Thank you everyone for your support watching our video, following us on twitter and spreading the word about our quest to get to Oprah Show for the Shania taping.

It was a success! Posted above is the Calgary Herald article recapping the experience. I'll keep you posted on how the brunch goes in Nashville.  Counting down the days.
