Flashback: Shania Twain and Elton John Swap Power Ballads

Superstars collaborated on "You're Still the One" and "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" at a 1999 Miami show

By Melinda Lorge | Rolling Stone | April 10, 2015

An unlikely pair, perhaps, but when Shania Twain and Elton John shared the stage at a 1999 Miami concert, the admiration was mutual.

"A few months ago, by sheer accident I ran into this guy at a radio station in London," Twain told the audience of first meeting the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. "The first words I heard out of his mouth were, 'You’re still the one I run to.'"

That compliment was, of course, in reference to the country superstar's most successful crossover single, 1998's "You're Still the One," which John sang with Twain, trading his piano for a seat next to her. The bright red tuxedo-clad crooner and ponytailed country-pop star transitioned the romantic ballad into another, “Something About the Way You Look Tonight," which John had just recently re-recorded in tribute to the late Princess Diana.

The two music icons' medley was filmed for a CBS show, as well as for Twain's DVD package, The Specials, which included footage from her Winter Break and Come on Over tours and featured appearances from the Backstreet Boys and Canadian folk group, Leahy. The live collection came during a whirlwind year for the singer-songwriter, in which she was crowned CMA Entertainer of the Year and earned two Grammy awards for "You're Still the One." Co-written with her now ex-husband, Mutt Lange, the song topped the country charts and was Twain's first Top 10 hit on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart. Its lyrics were partly inspired by media criticism of Twain and Lange's age difference (almost 17 years) while they were dating.

Released in 1997, "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" was the lead off single on John and longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin’s The Big Picture Album, and later became a chart-topping companion to "Candle in the Wind," spending ten straight weeks at Number One. That same year, John released his own two-disc DVD special, Elton 60Live at Madison Square Garden in honor of his 60th birthday and record-breaking number of concerts (60) at the famed New York venue.

This year, Twain plans to release a new album — her first collection of new material in 13 years — and will embark on a farewell tour, which wraps just before her 50th birthday. The Rock This Country trek begins June 5th in Seattle, Washington.
