Throwback Thursday: Remember When Shania Twain Rocked the Super Bowl Halftime Show?

Throwback Thursday: Remember When Shania Twain Rocked the Super Bowl Halftime Show?

By Laura Hostelley | Sounds Like Nashville | February 2, 2017

In 2003, country star Shania Twain was on top of the world. That was evident when she was invited to perform at Super Bowl XXXVII, a matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders.

The stage inside San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium exploded with fireworks as Twain sang the opening lines of “Man, I Feel Like a Woman.” Clad in head-to-toe leather and a jeweled crop top, the singer dazzled as she confidently strutted in the center of the field. Accompanied by a band that included a key-tar and a fiddle, Shania owned the stage while singing the female-anthem.

Twain followed up “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” with her 2002 smash, “Up!” She danced her way down the catwalk and eventually wandered into the crowd as fans went crazy over her. As her performance came to a close, she followed the song’s instructions and was elevated into the air on a rising platform. Fireworks and confetti made the perfect backdrop as her iconic performance finished.

The 2003 Super Bowl halftime also featured fellow musicians No Doubt and Sting, who sang “Just A Girl” and “Message In A Bottle,” respectively. The halftime show is one that will go down in entertainment history and will be remembered long beyond who actually won the game (the Buccaneers).

No country act has played the halftime show at the big game since Twain, though many have performed the National Anthem. You can watch Luke Bryan kickoff the Super Bowl LI with “The Star-Spangled Banner” this Sunday at 6:30 PM ET on FOX. The Atlanta Falcons will play the New England Patriots.

Remember When Shania Twain Rocked the Super Bowl Halftime Show?

By Billy Dukes | Taste of Country | February 7, 2021

It's been more than a decade since a country singer took the stage during the Super Bowl's halftime show. Shania Twain was the last to do it, playing two songs during Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego, Calif., in 2003. Her performance, which you can watch here, holds up nicely in comparison to more modern productions.

Twain was amidst a mini-comeback, having just released her first new album in five years. She started the show with "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" before playing "Up!," a track from her new album of the same name. She wore the same outfit throughout, and rocked the stage with great confidence. The crowd went nuts when she went "up" during "Up!"

No Doubt and Sting would follow her performance, but it was Twain's songs that country fans appreciated the most. The next year saw Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction. Twain's outfit was just as revealing as Jackson's, but she (thankfully) didn't have an assist from Justin Timberlake.
